coreservicesd and loginwindow crashing; unable to login

Suddenly on my Intel Imac running 10.6.2 I'm unable to get to loginwindow so I cannot log in. After power up I just get blue screen that changes color about every 10 seconds. If I boot into single user mode and tail the syslog I see that:

"com.apple.coreservicesd; job appears to have crashed, segmentation fault
loginwindow: abort trap
waiting for dsmos
unable to lookup coreservices session port
loginwindow: failed to get ASN from coreservices so aborting"

the above repeats at about 10 second intervals

I tried deleting files in /Library/Caches and /System/Library/Caches and loginwindow plist and rebooted but the problem persists.

Any suggestions on how to overcome this?

try booting in safe mode (reboot and hold shift at the chime).
