Brand new Macbook, 92% Health

I just got anew white unibody Macbook at the weekend, it has under 5 cycles and the battery health from iStat Pro is reading at 92%. It was 100% but after the calibration it dropped.

Is this ok? I was under the impression that after 1000 recharges it should still have 80% left. I have been on the phone to AppleCare and they say it's fine but I'm having my doubts.

Thanks.

Nothing to worry about.

During the first few months, you're going to see that percentage jump around a bit. What's more important is to note the *Full Charge Capacity* of the battery;

To get this information:

1) Open up *System Profiler* in Applications>Utilities
2) Click on Power in the left-hand column
3) Under the battery heading, look for *Full Charge Capacity*. Make a note of this number and then check on your battery every couple of weeks.

Hi Caris365,

Less than 48 hours and you're already at 5 cycles? Is that normal usage? Technically, you're at less 1000 cycles and still greater than 80% so you're within spec. That could be why AppleCare said nothing to worry about.

As Lyssa asked, I'd be curious to see what the FCC of the battery is versus what it was at right out of box. While iStat Pro is usually pretty accurate, I sometimes question their rounding values. I've seen simple math indicate a percentage or two differential from iStat's output.

Hey thanks for the reply. It had actually been 3 days (4 today). I've used my Macbook a lot so that's why I have used 5 cycles already.

Here is the FCC, from About the Mac.

Full charge capacity (mAh): 5203

Is that ok? It's jumped back up to 95% now.

I have a new MacBook unibody white body. The cycle count is barely 13 but the FCC has dropped to 5397mAh. Is this normal ? Sometimes I think that since the time I have purchased macbook , I am worrying more for battery life cycles. Earlier with windows it used to be viruses , malwares 😟

I am taking the reading from iStatPro and the readings dropped today when the laptop went into low battery sleep mode from long continous use !!

I'm getting a little concerned about mine too. I bought it three weeks ago. When I first got it the Fully charged capacity was ~5550mAh, and I thought awesome, it's 100mAh over the intended capacity!

It stayed above the original 5450 for the first 2-3 charges, however since then it's been dropping rapidly.

Current stats:
Cycle Count: 7
Current Battery Capacity: 5071mAh
Original Battery Charge 5450mAh
Health 93%

Every cycle it seems to lose between 50-100mAh, starting to get worried. I've done two battery calibrations now in the hope of stemming the loss of capacity but it doesn't seem to have helped.

At this rate it's going to be below the 80% health after just 20-30 cycles, let alone 300!
Do I have a dud battery or is it just initial fluctuation? The capacity has not risen at all, only gone down.

When I see people posting that their batteries still hold 95%+ capacity after hundreds of cycles, this makes me worried.

Thanks, I thought as much.
The battery still seems to last a very long time and it's a massive improvement on my last laptop (AMD athlon 3700+ desktop processor, Radeon 9700 pro; basically a desktop replacement). Even when that was brand new it only lasted an hour and towards the end it only lasted 10 mins! I have to say It's a breath of fresh air buying a mac, the battery life is fantastic!

That said I still can't pull myself away from a PC as my main comp though, maybe in a few months with my mac I'll be converted though 😀

Did my first caliberation after 25 cycles.. the health has dropped to 94 % ( its still charging to full charge capacity so hoping for a correction in this) .. iStatPro is still not showing accurate statistics.. Any idea what might be the problem in this ?? For example Mac says 1 hr remaining for full charge and iStat is saying 2:15 hrs
