Boot Camp Assistant cannot be used

Have a new MacBook Pro running the latest version of 10.6. Looking to install Windows 7. When I try to open Boot Camp assistant I get the statement: "Boot Camp Assistant cannot be used. You must update your system software before using this setup assistant." Not sure what I need to update. Have run software update and do not need a firmware update. Any ideas?

I've seen this error message reported before, and usually zap pram/nvram and repair disk permissions, and boot from another media and run Repair Disk.

You might even if that doesn't let you run BCA, run the full 10.6.2 combo update (standalone manual update). Works as a mini system reinstall/refresh.

Something "flaky" for sure with the Assistant.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. Zapped the PRAM and used the original disk to do a permissions repair and a HD repair. No help... still get the same annoying message.

Even though I'm running 10.6.2, will download the combo update and see if this helps. If not, looks like I'll be taking a trip to the Apple store.

Had no trouble whatsoever installing Windows XP on my older MacBook Pro using the BootCamp Assistant. Went very smoothly and has run flawlessly.

Thanks for your help!

I am not sure if you got a response to this or a fix at the Apple store but for anyone else who looks at this thread try this;

I work at a private university where I am sometimes the only guy around who can fix Mac problems so I deal with a lot of different strange things. Sometimes this problem occurs because the partition is a bit weird.

I recommend going into your Disk Utility and under your hard drive on the left side click on the macintosh HD and then on the top make sure you have Journaling 'enabled.' If it is not then it will most likely not be able to run the Boot camp assistant.

Now that you have done that you should probably be able to partition the drive. if not do a verify and fix the permissions on the drive and most likely you will be bale to do it.

Let me know if this works for everyone because I want to know if it is just a problem with our Mac image or if it is something else.

Cheers-

ok, here's my story
15" macbook pro (2007, version 3,1) 2.4 ghz
500 gb drive
leopard 10.5.8

so i went to install boot camp and it gave me an error message "disk not supported"

looked around and found that the problem was i needed a single partition only (won't work with split drive)

then it recognized the drive, but i got the error message "software update needed"
no software update needed according to the Software Update...***?
checked my firmware version under "About This Computer" up to date

so i looked at a few more forums and found the answer that worked for me

1/ in Disk Utility, make sure that journalling is 'enabled' on the drive
i also clicked on 'erase empty space on the disk, not sure if this matters

2/ repair disk permissions

3/ reboot and zap the PRAM (hold down p, r, apple, option keys) when restarting, the machine will make the startup sound, then reboot and make the startup sound again. . . let go of the pram keys and let the machine boot normally

4/ you should be good to go!

5/ IMPORTANT make sure you print off the Boot Camp Setup instructions
ya, i never usually do that either, but there's a lot of non-intuitive steps to follow

6/ need XP 32 bit disk, not sure if 64 bit is supported

hopefully this will work for you

I had the same problem on my MBP with Snow Leopard and believe it was related to using 3rd party tools on the windows partition. I cloned the mac OS to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner (free app), reformatted the entire drive as Mac Journaled and reinstalled the copy again using Carbon Copy Cloner. Took less than a half an hour.

When I ran Boot Camp assistant it worked fine. Took me right to the partition screen.
