Help with home LAN mixed Windows 7 and Mac OS X mystery please

Here's my configuration/situation:

Home LAN. 2 Windows 7 PCs. 1 Macbook Pro OS X Snow Leopard. 1 NEW WRT610N Linksys router.

Connections are:

1 Win 7 PC wireless. 1 Win PC wired. Mac wired.

Before I changed the router out from old D-Link G router, all computers could see everything. I "upgraded" to new Linksys N router and now the Mac can browse to ("see") the 2 Win 7 PCs BUT the 2 Win 7 PCs can no longer "see" the Mac. I can however ping the Mac from them both.

Hope I can get the experts to solve or refer me to someone who could.

Hi hotkey, I've put out a call for someone from elsewhere who may be able to help. I'd have a stab at it myself if it was earlier version, but I'm afraid I haven't used Windows 7.

All I can think of is that on the Mac you may need to change the settings in System preferences / Sharing / by selecting "File Sharing" and enabling one of the additional protocols when you hit the "Options" button.

Cheers

Rod

The path is "/var/log/samba/log.nmbd". When you are having low level trouble, I suggest that you forget the GUI stuff and use a command line. Just open up Terminal and do this:

sh-3.2$ cd /var/log
sh-3.2$ ls
CDIS.custom mail.log
DiagnosticMessages mb.log
alf.log ppp
apache2 sa
appfirewall.log samba
asl secure.log
com.apple.IPConfiguration.bootp securityproxy
cups system.log
daily.out system.log.0.bz2
fax system.log.1.bz2
fsck_hfs.log system.log.2.bz2
install.log system.log.3.bz2
ipfw.log system.log.4.bz2
kernel.log system.log.5.bz2
kernel.log.0.bz2 uucp
kernel.log.1.bz2 weekly.out
krb5kdc windowserver.log
launchd-shutdown.log windowserver_last.log
launchd-shutdown.log.1
sh-3.2$ cd samba
sh-3.2$ ls
cores log.smbd nmbdyank.log.0.bz2
log.nmbd nmbdyank.log
sh-3.2$

You probably need to change the network settings for the connections on the Windows 7 PCs from "public" to "home".

As a default Windows protects you from other computers on your network!

Check the security settings on the Windows 7 PCs.

iFelix -

How do you do the quotes in this forum?

You said:
"You probably need to change the network settings for the connections on the Windows 7 PCs from "public" to "home".

They are set to Home Network as they had been prior to the router change.

And,

"Check the security settings on the Windows 7 PCs."
I have everything shut off, even though they worked fine before the router change.

LOL - I must be a complete doofus! You said 'click the "', which to me indicates a mouse click but I don't see any " to click on. If you meant "press SHIFT+' keys", that only opens a new browser. Further you said "The > is the key", so now I wonder if I'm supposed to press SHIFT+. keys to get a ">"?

As far as subnet settings, old router used 192.168.0.x. New router uses 192.168.1.x. But all devices seem to have the correct subnet sequence 192.168.1.x so I'm wondering what changing that would do?

So look at this animation on how to quote - http://screenr.com/5gx

As you can see when in this edit mode I clicked the " button. This put your text into my edit window with a > in front of it.

As for your problem...

As far as subnet settings, old router used 192.168.0.x. New router uses 192.168.1.x. But all devices seem to have the correct subnet sequence 192.168.1.x so I'm wondering what changing that would do?

Change back to 192.168.0.x and see if that makes a difference.

Of course this is the part I like best about the "black art" of networking....

Yesterday when I last left the PC, I had connected to Mac via Run \\Macbook\Jack User DI then Password and mapping the drive.

Today, Red "X" thru mapped drive so I drop down to Run menu again and as my eyes are lowering guess what I see listed under "Network". You guessed it - MACBOOK!!!!!!

I could just scream. But am not going to for fear I'll scare it away. We'll see how she goes for a while. Many thanks for your help and don't be surprised if I'm back on same post in 5 minutes or 5 weeks after Macbook disappears again!
