Firmware 3.1.3 - Internet Tethering with Factory Unlocked iPhone

Hi,

I have an oficial unlocked iPhone which I just updated to the new firmware 3.1.3. I have read rumors on the web that with this new firmware oficial unlocked iPhones can use the Internet Tethering option on the phone with unoficial carriers. However, I have checked Cellular Data on the phone and the spaces to add the APN for tethering is not there. Also, there is no option for tethering on the Network. So basically my iPhone is not showing signs of allowing tethering after this firmware update. Does anyone know if this is true?
I live in Costa Rica and the telecom provider here does not carry the iPhone but it does support tethering. It would be great if I could take advantage of this without having to jailbreak.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi luchocastro. I have reading this forum trying to get tethering option working on my official unlocked iPhone 3GS and after following the instructions from the link in UK that you posted, I'm still unsucessfull. My carrier is ICE from Costa Rica. Could you please send me the custom IPCC file that you use to activate tethering in CR? My e mail is dafotr AT gmail DOT com. I really appreciate your help. Thanks.

After the last experiences with iOS updates I am very careful. Up to iOS 3.1.2 tethering was disabled by apple for factory unlocked iPhones. Up to now I cannot find any experiences with regard to iOS 4
Be careful and better wait to update your firmware if you need tethering. There will be enough victoms which use neverlocked iPhones and trust Apple - if tethering will be impossible for unlocked iPhones again due to iOS 4 we will read complaints in a few days.

Thank you for your reply,
well me too i am careful now before updating, because with 3.1.2 they took Tethering from me and they lost my trust.

i tried to search but it seems people are confused, because it the first time they get tethering with AT&T Legaly. and i cannot find a clear blog that states that Factory unlocked phone still have tethering enabled.

lets wait 🙂 as i was victim before i will not be now.

I am sticking with 3.1.3 with tethering

I cannot confirm your experience. In the meanwhile I upgraded my iPhone 3 GS from Italy to iOS 4 and tehering still works. Even faster. Before I upgraded I deleted the Mobileconfig- ippc - file I downloaded in the past and made all network settings manually. The Tethering-Button disappeared immediately after the upgrade to iOS 4.1, but after configurations everything was fine. So iOS 4 cannot be responsible for your loss of tethering if you use an officially unlocked device.

After the Upgrade to iOS 4 you just should reboot your device and than sync with iTunes (restore from backup is NOT neccessary). Might be you also need to reenter your access data (APN etc.). In general it is no problem to upgrade from iOS 3.1.3 to iOS 4. You won`t loose your tethering feature again. If you own like me an factorty unlocked iPhone 3GS you do not neet to jailbreak or something like that. Tehering is still supported by iOS 4 for every SIM-card.

I have just tried doing a Restore to default from iTunes (reinstall firmware + iOS 4) and then restoring my settings from backup. I am not using any ipcc files and I still don't have tethering back.

As far as I understand, when you connect your iphone it checks for ipcc files via iTunes and if your provider have one (hosted with apple) you will get tethering. I think my problem is the danish provider TDC does not have an ipcc file hosted and with iOS 4 they changed the default from allow to deny if your provider don't have an ipcc file. Just a guess though, but that would explain why you don't have any problems if your provider is recognized and mine isn't.

I know Apple only have agreements with 3 providers in denmark and mine isn't one of them.
