The "BONG" sound is really loud on startup, what's the fix?

It's usually tied to the volume of the sound source. If you're only using the built-in speakers, that might make it tricky... since I don't think you can adjust the volume before the OS has booted!

I always use external speakers, so in that case I simply avoid turning the speakers on/up until after the bong.

One more thing - I've used StartUp Sound in both Panther and Tiger with no problems. You can mute the sound, or lower its volume via the Panel Screen.

I can't find any information on turning the volume
down. It's so loud it wakes me neighbors. 🙂

What we do is just turn the volume down when we shut it off overnight. Then again, I don't think we have the volume on at all these days, except for apps that require it.

Or is that jack in a plug?

Anyway, if you have something with a mini jack such as a splitter, cable extension or any thing that doesn't have a speaker attached, plugging it in will disable the internal speakers. Even a pair of earbuds shouldn't be loud enough to be a bother. If you have an old head set that may be broken you could snip off the jack and use that.

A friend of mine makes mac programs and he just finished this one up:

It will turn off the start up chime and do MANY more things.

Also:
you can also ignore the startup chime normally by holding down the mute button while your mac boots up
