Aperture 3 - graphic bugs

Hi,

I'm testing the new Aperture 3 and the graphic bugs didn't gone away 😟

Here the bug during using the new brushes

I had such graphic bugs in Aperture 2 too.

Any hints? Is it my "old" iMac? Time to upgrade?

Thanks and greeting from Germany

Just downloaded 10.6.3. Everything seemed to work fine until I played with some brushes (particularly brush colour in and brush B&W away). The bug's still there. At least on my machine. However, it only appears when I'm applying adjustments (i.e. brushing). After I'm finished (i.e. release the mouse button) all weird colours disappear. Really not sure what to do now. Aperture is now usable but I'm still reluctant to spend money on an upgrade. What if another update breaks everything again?

It seems that it might be a good time for the Aperture development team to arrange a meeting with the OS X graphics team and see how this can be resolved. I hope that everyone here who intends to continue using Aperture has logged this bug in the correct manner so that the developers are fully aware of the problems being encountered.

I tried it one last time after the 10.6.3 update - no difference at all for me. I'm out of here 🙂

Same problem here. It really makes A3 unusable for work. Similar problems starts even on Aperture 2 when I upgrade to Snow Leopard, but not as big as now in version 3. I have problems with Aperture 3 on 10.6.2 and 10.6.3 too.

I also have a mysterious problem with graphics that definitely came with SL. I'm not sure is this Aperture 3 graphics bug connected with this thing. Some other folks have the same problem, it's definitely something SL related. Leopard was free of this problem.

I have your same computer configuration. Here's my best advice as currently I use 3.0.2 on 10.6.2 without any real issues. (sometimes I see the limitation of the Graphics Card when doing certain edits, but really, I can't complain)

This is what I did:
Running SL and Aperture 2.1.4:

I installed an update from 1/19/10 released by Apple. It states it is a graphics firmware update for late 2008 computers (iMac and Mac Pro) with 7300gt and 7600gt cards running windows 7 in Boot Camp. Newsflash: Apple used these graphics cards in late 2006/early 2007 so the description seems flawed.

Here is what is interesting: I do not run Boot Camp or Windows 7. But, I ran the update anyway (figuring it pertained to my card and thought I had nothing to lose as the graphic glitches in Aperture were driving me crazy), it installed and changed my Rom version to 3467 from 3021. I noticed that almost every problem in Aperture disappeared. (sometimes when edge sharpening, you get an outline of the sharpened edges in red)

I then purchased/installed Aperture 3 on my 10.6.2 SL OS and was satisfied. Performance was decent and for my aged machine...acceptable. All edits performing well, sometimes the issue of which edits to perform first to avoid some artifacts, but overall, not a major issue.

I installed the 3.0.2 update to Aperture and things ran well. Library size shrank, pictures loaded very quickly...very pleased.

Installed 10.6.3 and ...disaster. There was so much graphic corruption going on that browsing images was almost worthless.

Fix: took out the SL DVD and reinstalled (this time with new Rom Revision from that update I performed previously) and then upgraded to 10.6.2 via manual update. Shut off automatic updates. Voila, everything working well.

Now, I am not sure if the graphics update I mention will load on your machine. If not, it may be because you do not have boot camp partition. At one time, I did have a boot camp partition, but had since deleted it.

I recommend this update to users of 7300 machines as it helped my situation tremendously after SL installation.

By the way: OpenGL benchmarks after 10.6.3 on my machine were much slower than with 10.6.2....confirming my suspicion that the graphic drivers were an issue for older NVIDIA users. I see that the new drivers were numbered 1.6.10. 10.6.2 drivers were labeled 1.6.6.

Thanks for your answer and pointing on the graphic card rom update. I successfully install the update, but as you already find out the problem persist in 10.6.3.

I will try to reinstall SL and update to 10.6.2 as you told. Is it possible to keep my data and bring them back on easy way on the same place on hard disk after reinstalling a "lower" version? I don't have time machine backup.

Thanks again, I really hope I will solve this problem.

I used a retail copy of the Snow Leopard DVD. I inserted the disk and installed the system OVER the existing 10.6.3 system. When finished, all of my data was still intact. I then went to the Apple Support Pages of Downloads and installed the 10.6.2 Combo Update. Afterwards, I ran the Software Update under the Apple icon to check for updates. I UNCHECKED the Mac OSX Update to avoid 10.6.3 and installed the remaining updates.

Warning: You proceed at your own risk without a backup. I have my Aperture Library backed up in 3 different drives just in case AND I have several external bootable disks just in case I need to make repairs

That said, it was smooth sailing with my reinstall. Good luck and check the Snow Leopard DVD documentation and ask in the Snow Leopard OSX forum about reinstalling to downgrade. You will get a tip or two there....post your results after you "downgrade"

Thank you, thank you, thank you...

It is much better now! I still have some particular problems with graphic bug, but not as big as before.

Aperture runs really fast, i didn't expect it after all this troubles. I forgot how this software should work 😉 It seems that is much faster then Aperture 2.1.4. Importing is fast, scrolling is really fast, going through photos in fullscreen is very good. Even previewing images seems a little bit faster. Exporting, and exporting to mail is also better. I'm waiting few more days for new camera 5d mark II, i hope that A3 will run pretty good with that big raw files.

I knew it that machine isn't so bad. 😉

Thanks a lot, man!

Peace

I have the same problems since the "upgrade" to OS10.6.3. I'm using Aperture 3.0.2 on an imac 6,1 with an Nvidia GeForce 7300 graphics card.

It did happen before, but only once every few weeks. Now, it shows up with every picture after one or two adjustments. Aperture 3 has become TOTALLY UNUSABLE !

Same here on my imac 24" with 7300gt and rom ver 3021. I have now partitioned my hd and have 10.5.8 running Aperture 2.1.4 on one and 10.6.3 with Aperture 3.0.2 on the other in the off chance that it will work one day and I can use it. As it stands at present Aperture 3 is completely unusable. Although I must say the other bugs seem to be better, ie continuous processing and sluggishness.

I am also having this problem. Using 10.6.3 with an ATI Radeon X1600 graphics card. I also sometimes have a similar issue when viewing/scaling photos in Preview. It definitely seems that the problem is with ATI Radeon X1600 and Snow Leopard. This makes Aperture pretty much useless for me.
