Aperture 3 hanging... and hanging... and chewing...

was totally stoked about upgrading today. now i'm kicking myself in the pants for doing it so quickly.

when i came home for lunch, i installed A3, typed in my purchased Upgrade serial, and then allowed A3 to upgrade my old A2 library. obviously, this was gonna take awhile, so i left it running whilst i went back to the office. when i returned home, i discovered my MBP had actually frozen. ok, that was weird. i had to do a hard shut down (hold down power button) and then reboot. everything comes back fine, i reopen A3, and its just processing "files." i let that go for about 15 minutes, come back, and the MBP has just sloooooowed to a crawl. i mean awful. it was like being at a concert: beach balls of death EVERYWHERE.

i didn't want to, but i had to force quit A3 to do anything else. so i did that, did a normal Restart, and then reopened A3. still processing, same chain of events. i mean, it was terrible.

so finally, FINALLY, i get down to the last 12 "files" or "items" or whatever, and A3 seems to be really stuck on these last 12. it'll just sit there and churn away whilst eating up all system resources and giving my BBODs whenever i move the cursor around.

so... what's going on here? i've tried repairing the database as outlined in the recently update Aperture manual (to no real end; didn't fix anything), and my next step, i suppose, is rebuilding the database. is anyone else having a problem like this? i've seen lots of folks having fairly terrible times with the move, but nothing quite like this. i've a fairly large library (not really giant by any means).

so: help!

the joys of a three-month old include getting up at 4.30am, allowing me to check on my reattempted library upgrade! hooray!

actually, this time, all went well. remember, i unchecked the box at very beginning of the A2 -> A3 library migration that allowed for all my older images to work as A3 masters. if you haven't read through the manual yet (i haven't, i just searched this out), apparently the only reason you need to upgrade your library to A3 spec is if you actually plan on going back and editing your older photos with the new A3 tools (like the fancy brushes and such). otherwise, you don't HAVE to upgrade/update your entire library at once. if you come across an old project (or individual image) that you'd like to play with again, you can absolutely "reprocess" that image or project for use with the full set of A3 tools.

all that said: i don't personally feel this should be case. i feel that it should just work from the get go and i shouldn't have to work around or not process my older images for A3 just because it makes my whole computer unstable. but this is the solution i have for now.

Don't sweat it, there's a lot going on in the background once your loaded and/or database converted. Not just "face recognition" but also "processing" (I think it's updating raw conversions with the latest and greatest.

Slow, beachballs, delays last night it was horrible. I let it run overnight and just checked - no activity, whatever it was doing is done. Everything is crisp and very zippy now!! I feel so much better now!

Oh, and my database was 260 gig.

The funny thing is, that even though turning off "Faces" and Geo Tagging give you the illusion that it is working better, it's still atrociously slow. I ran a test on my Mac Pro last night, Aperture 2 vs Aperture 3, and my Aperture 2 ran circles around A3. I mean, why is it that when I do a brush stroke, it takes a few seconds before it actually catches up with what I just did on the screen? Why is it that processing images which I imported takes twice as long as it did on A2? Why is it that when I zoom to 100% I can almost watch the 3 passes it takes before the photo is loaded?

Even though there are some performance issues with A2, it sure as **** beats A3! There is no good God **** reason that this software should have been delivered to the customer without "proper" testing. If they had done some "real world" testing, then they would have found out about this right from the get go. That's the problem with their secrecy, no beta testers to report problems out in the field.

I've tried Lightroom, I've tried Nik Capture NX 2, and to be honest I like Aperture the best. However, this latest snafu is just embarrassing. Unless Apple gets their proverbial **** together, I may have to consider moving to Lightroom as a result. I sure hope they make a public statement or an update to fix this in the next few days, because otherwise the contemplations may become reality.

I have been nothing short of happy as **** with my Apple products over the years, but this is the first time that I can honestly say that I am utterly disappointed in Apple for putting out a products that clearly has issues, and major ones at that.

I installed the Aperture 3 Trial and have had issues with performance as well. The brushes are almost unusable at times. They aren't smooth to brush adjustments. I often have to wait for the adjustment to catch up after a brush stroke. I also have experienced video driver issues where the photo turns green or magenta and has lines through it. Even changing things like exposure, contrast, etc are slow. I change the slider and wait for the change to occur in the image. The image also tends to go very low res for a second or so until the change is applied. The picture looks kind of blurry at that point. I am currently testing the Lightroom 3 Beta and have found it's performance to be superior to both Aperture 2 and 3. The adjustment brushes in Lr3 work flawlessly. It's unfortunate because I feel Aperture is a more useful tool and I really want to love it, but with Lightroom 3's performance and better integration with Photoshop I am thinking I will end up buying Lightroom when it is released.

I'm also having a nightmare upgrading my library to Aperture 3. My library contains about 12,000 pictures, and was sized 18GB.

After the initial upgrade of the library, Aperture is completely unusable. It also takes up so much CPU, that the entire operating system is unusable while Aperture is opened.

I understand its normal at first for Aperture to be slow because it is upgrading all the pictures (I turned off Faces). But the problem is, if I give Aperture all the time it needs, it fails because OS X complains there is no more memory available for the application. Aperture says it's processing, but the activity window shows its always at 0 of 1201 items to process. My entire 35GB of free space on my hard drive gets completely taken by Aperture. If I kill aperture, my HD slowly comes back to 35GB of free space. If I restart Aperture, it takes about an hour to eat up all the available space and it gets stopped complaining it doesn't have memory.

I've done this about 4 times now, and I have no idea if there's any progress being made in the upgrade. If I try cancelling the "Processing" task in the Activity window, it takes forever and never actually cancels it (it gets stuck at "Cancelling").

I guess I'll have to pull my backup and start over again. Very very disappointed with this purchase...
