Win7 64 bit USB & MTP issues

Which particular Compaq model do you have, Qoo?

I too am having this issue and it's beginning to fustrate me.


My iphone seems to works perfectly fine in itunes but I cannot transfer picture from the phone since this mtp driver is not working. I've googled for a solution but figured it would be best to check for support in on these boards

I've Tried completly removing the itunes software and anyy apple application for that matter and done a complete reinstall but still have this error.

no one have any info on this matter.

It's been ages since my last post. I haven't needed to transfer pictures directly to my pc yet but I want to be able to a back up soon

I am having the exact same problem. I built my system for gaming. I am running Asus P6T Deluxe v2 mobo, intel I7 920 CPU, 6GB of Corsair Dominator, 6- 1TB 7200RPM Western Digital Caviar Black Sata Drives, and a lots of other goodies 🙂

Like the post above, When I plug into one of my main USB ports, I immediately am recognized by Itunes, but my system will not recognize my iphone other than saying I have an MTP USB Device eror.

I am unable to upload any of my pitures to to my computer. Trying to bypass itunes and just updating my USB drivers hasn't worked either. The files can be seen on the phone, but not uploaded to a drive and read.

This has really sterted to tick me off as well. I don want to lose all those pics for something simple that Windows or Apple failed to complete in their software updates. Someone must have a workaround- or better yet.....a fix. Thanks

Me too. Syncs with iTunes, doesn't show up in my computer.

I connected my iPhone to my hubby's computer (Windows 7, no iTunes installed), and the MTP driver was successful. I copied all my photos off of the iPhone so I can now do what I need to with the phone to get the connection going with my computer.

Question. Did anybody use a clean install of iTunes, or are people copying their libraries between installations? What I mean is copying the old itunes folder over to the new installation so you don't have to re-sync all the music? I did, and wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Just trying to figure out what is different between computers...

Two things I'm going to try (haven't yet), are to 1. Delete all photos off of my phone since I now have them backed-up and 2. login to the computer as a different user and see if it's a permission thing??? I'm an administrator, but not THE administrator on the computer...

Anybody else try anything similar?

Oh, by the way, I have AppleCare and called them about this. They told me to delete any photos that were not taken by the phone and then when that did not work, they told me it's a windows issue and they couldn't help me. Talk about a waste of money for support 😟 I was hoping for better...

I'll post if I figure anything out... It seems to be a common issue.

Yeah I forgot to mention that I called Apple too. What a waste! The typical blame game ensued! It is not our issue, it an issue with Microsoft.

I got news for both of them, if they can identify that it is the other software company, that would imply that they know what the problem is and how to fix it. How else could they say who is responsible. Pesonally, I don't care who is responsible just give me/us a sollution to fix it.

Okay, I fixed mine. Even though ALL the photos and videos were taken by the phone, they were the problem. Here's the sequence that worked for me:

1. Connect the iPhone to a computer WITHOUT iTunes. Windows will detect it as a camera. Copy all the photos off and back 'em up.
2. Delete all the photos from the iPhone (I individually deleted them on the phone, but I suppose you could use the other computer to delete them too, the important part is to just delete 'em)...
3. Connect the iPhone to the computer you want to use that has iTunes installed. The phone will sync with iTunes, but because the camera roll is empty, it will NOT try to install the MTP driver. This step is necessary for iTunes to see the camera roll is empty.
4. Detatch the phone from the computer and take a photo. At this point you will have 1 brand new photo in the camera roll.
5. Reconnect the phone to the computer. iTunes will sync and the driver will install properly, allowing you to open the photo folder and get your new photo.

**My opinion is that something is up with iTunes. If a computer without iTunes recognizes the camera part of the iPhone, and a computer with iTunes does not, then iTunes is the issue. Clearing the photos and syncing an empty iPhone with iTunes clears something in iTunes so that it allows windows to properly detect again... I'm not a programmer, so I don't know the nuts and bolts of how...

Hopefully those of you out there that are having this issue have access to another computer without iTunes in order to back-up your photos...

I mentioned all this to my husband and he reminded me of something. When I reattached the phone at the end of the process (after taking my one photo), iTunes asked me to authorize the computer for my applications. I had to enter my password to keep my applications active.

This tells me that iTunes was using the photos for authentication maybe? By removing all the photos it reset something in iTunes...

Hmmm... More proof that it's an iTunes problem, not windows...

This is getting rediculous, this has been a known issue for awhile. This has nothing to do with a Windows problem, in fact, before they did one of their last two ITUNES updates it was working fine. The problem is with the 64bit driver, the mtp part of it. I am going to try and force the 32bit driver in a minute.

Apple, you have NO business at all calling other companies lazy when you take this long with this and other known issues...

Yet another funny thing, the ipad and iphone are using the same drivers according to device manager on my pc and the ipad comes up under my computer to transfer photos fine yet my phone does not.

This worked for me as well. So far so good. On the other computer, I did have to fix a driver issue. On a Windows 7 32 bit the driver had a big X on it in the Device manager. Rather than reinstall, I just hit "Disable" and then "Enable" immediately following and it fixed itself. Took all the photos off.

Interestingly enough, after removing all photos, my iPhone still reports 3 photos in the count, but it doesn't display any...
