Apple mobile device service has stopped working - continues

Hi

I have a 16GB iPhone with 02 in the UK.

My first iPhone with 02 had trouble receiving calls with about 90% of incoming calls going straight to voice mail. I also couldn't backup that phone as every time I tried with iTunes, i got the message "Apple mobile device service has stopped working" about a minute into backup.

This happened continually, I re-installed iTunes so many times, still with little luck. I tried a different cable too. All on a brand new Dell Vostro desktop PC.

So, I took the phone back to 02 with these problems. 02 promptly replaced my iPhone.

Now, I have exactly the same problem. I obviously have nothing to restore on the iPhone as I was never able to back it up in the first place.

Every time I try and backup the iPhone I get the error "Apple mobile device service has stopped working". Again i tried a different cable and have removed and re-installed iTunes several times.

Anyone any ideas?

Regards

D

Okay. let's see if the PC has been collecting any further information on the errors.

Head into your Problem Reports and Solutions Control panel (or the Windows 7 equivalent). Open your Problem History, and look for recent Apple Mobile Device Support problem reports generated at the same time as you've been getting those errors. Open the problem reports and have a check through the details. Do they all seem to be saying the same thing? If so, paste the contents of a typical problem report into a reply here. (Fingers crossed, that may give us a heads up on what is causing the errors.)

I'm getting the same thing on my new O2 iPhone, but I also had it the last few months on my old iPhone (also with O2).

I've deleted the Mobile Device Helper and resinstalled iTunes, but it makes no difference.

This is a really serious bug as it stops you from syncing info to your iPhone and also prevents you from backing up your phone. Essentially it makes the iPhone into something with no relationship with your mac, which defeats the whole point. I'm surprised not to see a better response from Apple to this - they need to fix this bug urgently or we may as well all buy Blackberries.

There are many parts to iTunes on a Windows PC. Try uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes again following the instructions exactly in the article below. This usually fix this issue.

I was having this same problem with my new iPad 3G. It was driving me insane and preventing me from syncing the iPad.

I removed and re-installed all Apple components from my computer as recommended (in the recommended order). But, the problem persisted.

The error message looked just like the one posted above:

Application Name: AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe

The SOLUTION came when i discovered that there were two copies of CoreFoundation.dll on my computer.

One was in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support.

The other was in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support.

I removed the copy of CoreFoundation.dll from the Mobile Device Support folder, and the problem vanished.

I hope this helps.

Same issue -- I backuped my BF's iphone (original) and there is a backup on my computer (i think) -- when I tried to restore "Windows MoblieDevice Manager has stopped working"

I have been on the phone with Apple several times for this issue. I was told to try and copy the backups from one computer to the other (i have another computer with XP on it) -- I can actually use the right-click option where I could backup from a previous backup however I can't seem to get the copy somewhere that itunes will read it. I tried to look for the duplicate of the corefoundation.dll -- I do not have a duplicate -- -
please any ideas -- I guess the new itunes just doesn't work with vista...PLEASE HELP!!!

I have had the problem for almost a year now and with the is 4 update I want to back up the phone now and can't because of iTunes 9.2 saying the backup failed. I had windows vista before and now migrated to windows 7. In doing what you guys said, in computer management, I have the following:
- faulting module path error: c:\windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll
this is a NT layer dll and I'm not sure what to do if the problem came with this (which started in July 13)

For the backup issues, try updating your BIOS if you are running an Intel P55 chipset (Core i5 processor, eg). I was having problems after upgrading to iTunes 9.2 and attempting to load 4.0 iphone software (I have 3G version of the iPhone), backup failures, syncing issues, etc. Finally found that they'd had some issues with the USB support of P55 motherboards and that you needed to update the BIOS. I updated, and it solved all my backup issues. Was able to restore from the backup iTunes made before i tried to upgraded (that I'd thankfully copied out of the iTunes mobile backup folder so it didn't get overwritten).

Here's a link to a Microsoft forum on the issue:
