FileVault Security & TimeMachine

I'd like to increase the security of my Mac with FileVault (or anything). My Home Folder is 10GB. I'm curious if there are any issues like speed or TimeMachine issues with this? Also is it possible to only encrypt one file that I could put my sensitive documents & spreadsheets in, rather than the entire Home Folder?

the main issue with filevault is that it's poorly integrated with TM. a filevaulted home directory is only backed up when you log out and you can not access past backups of anything in a filevaulted home directory using regular "star wars" TM interface. and yes, you can encrypt just sensitive files that you want. make an encrypted sparse bundle disk image using disk utility and put those files inside.
