M-Audio KeyRig 49 does not seem to be recognized by GarageBand

I recently purchased a used M-Audio Key Rig 49. I cannot seem to find a way to select it (or even find it) as an input source in GarageBand. The computer finds my M-Audio FastTrack immediately. It recognizes it and I can then select it and record with it.

When I plug it in with USB, it lights up (blue lights over the octave buttons).

Here's what I've already tried...

I have tried two USB ports and two USB plugs as well as restarting the computer.

I have gone into Applications>Utilities>AudioMIDI Setup> and then selected MIDI Devices. It shows a generic USB Midi device and when I initially tested it, it did not respond - now it does 'ping' when I hit the keys (I ran a software update and another restart).

I have gone into GarageBand>Preferences>AudioMIDI>and I've tried all of the drop-down options for Audio Inputs (Fast Track, Built in Mic, Built in Input & System Setting) and none seem to work.

Of course, I've tried all 3 track types (Software Instrument, Real Instrument & Electric Guitar.) It seems you can only select inputs for Real Instruments and Electric Guitars - but as I mentioned above, my input options don't include the keyboard.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

OK, if anyone else has this problem. It is such a simple fix that I feel incredibly stupid - but at least it is posted now.

Create a software instrument track. Open the info panel. In the small icon at the bottom that identifies the instrument (default is piano), select the cog wheels (they look like the system settings wheels or machinery wheels) and then it works!

Yay!

you're actually making this harder then it is, there is nothing to select, it's automatically selected.

it will only work on a software track.

that is correct

if the cables are all good and plugged in, there's actually nothing else to do but play on a software track.

that's all you need to do.

that was just a coincidence, those are simply the icons that show up in the track header, they don't actually change any setting.

OK, I understand what you're saying - but now it stopped working again! Restart - still no. No more 'ping' on the AudioMIDI test either!! Aaaargh!

Good news - I am not as dumb as... well, OK, I won't go that far - but it stopped working... again, I've traded pugs, restarted, traded input USB ports... blah, blah - I think I know why they sold this on ebay!

you might be able to open it up and solder in a new jack, but you might try a McGuyver fix first

perhaps you can find a position, with a little tension on the plug/jack, that keeps the contact solid. if so, you could buy a USB extension cable and duct/gaffer tape it in place to keep continuous tension on it (you could also try this with the cable you have rather than the extension, the latter just being a nice convenience)
