Getting NEdit to work

Hey, guys, I'm taking an intro to computer sciences course this semester. I'm kind of dumb with computers, so I figured I would try to expand my knowledge. I assumed this was like a general type of course, not sure why, and it turns out they're teaching us how to code in C++. It's pretty fun, though, so I don't mind taking the course.

The thing is, I have to get NEdit to work on my Mac, and I'm having a hard time with it. I spoke with one of the professors today about this, and he told me that I need to download something called "X" for Macs.
Now, I kind of assumed that I already had it, since there's something called X11 that pops up whenever I open GIMP. I guess I was wrong, but how do I find this X program to get NEdit to work?

Well, it is true that I'm an idiot who didn't search first. Apparently I was correct, and X11 is indeed what he was talking about. However...

Not a clue what they're talking about here. (Remember, like I said, I'm dumb with computers.)

I could try posting this question in Unix, but I'll see if this section has anything to offer a fool.

I have nedit on a couple machines. Well apparently you have a functional X11 and therefore know how to start it and stop it(X11) with GIMP. Same thing with nedit. Download here http://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/editors/NEdit/v5_5/executables/
for the MacOSX intel.tar. Double click the tar to open it and the nedit folder will show up(open it) and click on the black executable icon named nedit and X11 will start up as will the nedit editor. And in that same nedit folder is a nedit.html which gives documentation of how to use nedit. You can eventually use the Finder to move the folder to /usr/local/bin where you would enter into Terminal, to start the editor: /usr/local/bin/nedit-5.5-Darwin-i386/nedit
From nedit folder: README
"INSTALLATION

NEdit consists of a single, stand-alone executable file which does not require
any special installation. To install NEdit on Unix systems, simply put the
nedit executable in your path."
Just so you get an idea of what is transpiring.
