Aperture 3 Sample Library

Hi,

The Aperture 3 DVD includes a sample library and also a "Wyoming" folder.
Because I have installed an Aperture 3 trial version three days ago and entered the serial number into it, I don't have the DVD and the sample library.

Do you know how can I get the sample library? I really want it to use it with the "Exploring Aperture" PDF and for testing.

Thanks.
(sorry if my english is not perfect!)

Unfortunately, as the above poster stated (who is an Apple employee), this is inaccurate. They have already been notified of this error. The sample library cannot be downloaded and the only way to obtain it with the physical boxed version. This is likely due to the size being over 6 GB.

Aside from that there are no other differences between the two versions.

That the Wyoming Folder is not available save with the boxed set is definitely a bummer. I've downloaded the program, cranked up the starter pdf, seen that it has a set of images to help guide me through the learning process, only to discover I have to buy the images to start my demo process. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

Someone should have at least provided a smaller subset of the image file to help those who download the trial demo.

Strikes me that it wouldn't be hard for Apple to put up a select sample from the sample library. Just for those of us who downloaded the trial version but are new to Aperture. Need to explore it in some depth before committing those dollars.

Another reason to put up a small library is the lack of third party books. If they were out there (and some of them come with online sample files to download), then it would be easier for us newbie downloaders to explore Aperture. Without them, it's a rather tough haul.

I haven't booted Aperture yet (the 30 day clock starts ticking when I do that for the first time). I hope Apple does something.

In the meantime, still using Lightroom 2.6.

The sample library is approximately 7 GB in size.

The last 2 Apple Pro Training Series books on Aperture also included a sample library to follow along with the exercises. I figure when the Aperture 3 version is released it will do the same.

In the meantime, there's no reason you can't experiment with the product as-is. What's wrong with importing some of your own images and testing?

This is absolute nonsense. What sense does it make that Apple would allow you to download the trial software without allowing you to download the sample libraries... it's ridiculous.

To claim that it's not available "because it's too big" is also shortminded to say the least... They could offer it as a separate download for those of us who would like to really "Explore" the trial.

So, bottom line Apple... you guys give us a "teaser" for 30 days without being able to really explore it?

You should make it so easy to explore that people will absolutely love the program and want to buy it.

Or is your strategy basically to force us to use our own files... mess them up testing and then "HAVE TO" buy the app to fix the mess?

You can use your own files to try out Aperture safely, by importing the images into Aperture as managed images.

The advantage of using the sample library instead of your own pictures, is it's a great example of how to organize a large picture library efficiently, using Aperture features such as albums, projects, folders, smart albums, etc.

I agree Aperture would attract more buyers with the sample library than just letting people try to understand what Aperture is all about with just a couple of their own pictures.

I, too, was frustrated by having the "Getting to know Aperture" PDF (not the exact name) and not having access to the sample library. I was using Lr3b at the time. What I did was
- import all new shots to both Lr3b and Ap3
- process everything in Lr3b, and as time allowed, tried to do the same in Ap3 (and slowly learned how it worked)

I did read the PDF I mentioned above, and I did go through almost every one of the short lessons using my own photos. It was a good introduction to the interface and the processes involved.

When I was done testing -- long before my 30-day Ap3 trial expired -- I purchased Ap3. I am still in the process of moving my photos to Ap3. I now do all my processing in Ap3.

Again, it is frustrating to have to buy the product to access the sample library (I loaded it from CD and never used it), but it is +in no way+ an impediment to learning and/or testing Ap3.
