Not sure...but this sounds like the exact problem I had a couple of days ago. I found help somewhere in the troubleshooting on this site, but unfortnately I don't have the link. Anyway, I restarted it and as soon as the Apple logo appeared I had to hold the home button. I think I had to hold it for about a minute. After that, the screen with the disk and USB cable appears. Once that screen was showing the computer recognized it again and I was able to restore it.
Try to force your iPod into recovery mode. Disconnect it from the computer's USB cord. Turn it off if you can by holding the sleep/wake switch until you see the red slide to off. _Press and hold the home button_ while plugging it into the computer's USB cord. _Continue holding the Home button_ while the iPod starts up. While starting up, you will see the Apple logo. When you see "Connect to iTunes" on the screen, you can release the Home button and iTunes will display the recovery mode message. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
Then you can restore your iPod: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
