iPhone/iPod Proxy Authentication DOES NOT work.

Safari works on my iPod, however most other apps do not work when connected to the University Wifi (which requires an HTTP proxy to connect to the internet). None of the ports used by the proxy are blocked, as all traffic works through Safari, and everything on my Laptop works fine through it (funny how PCs 'just work'!).

Thanks Apple, another quality product!!!!

I guess I have no use for this thing now, so I can take it back to the store!

The issue is, you can't authenticate to the Apple store through a proxy server.. I have tried via my iTouch as well as 30 iMacs... e. g. this is evident when you hit the buy button in iPhoto, it prompts for your credential and fails.. With the iTouch it happens when purchasing an app, it prompts for your Apple credentials, even if you're already logged in, and fails with the error: Cannot connect to the Store - A secure connection could not be established. Please check your Date & Time setting. The account being used to connect to the proxy has relaxed privs and is not scrutinized by the proxy server and it still doesn't work. If I exclude the ip address of the iTouch or iMac it then works. It's not a protocol issue but it rather looks to be a content type issue. I've struggle with this for a very long time and have found no way to get this to work without having the device bypass the proxy all togeter wich defeats the purpose all together.... I hope this was enough, if not I'll be more than happy to supply anything to help get this to work.

The proxy I'm trying to connect to is an HTTPS University Proxy. Apparently it doesn't send authentication information or something. Everything works just fine on my laptop if the proxy is used. But on my iPod, there are very few applications that actually authenticate with the proxy, which I assume is because of the OS.

Applications that DO work include Maps, Safari and Mail (Exchange Only).

This is a major issue that remains unresolved. My laptop connects perfectly to Skype on my corporate network (has a proxy), but my Ipod always hangs up at "connecting" when I launch Skype. I am able to launch Safari and authenticate through the proxy, but not Skype.

Apple - please please fix this.

I have been with this same problem for over an year now. I have a wifi with proxy (authentication) at work. Appstore, iTunes and safari works. Other than that, no other app recognises internet availability via proxy. They just fail to communicate via proxy. Even apples own weather and stocks fail.

Because of this, it is impossible to do skype telephony with wifi. Also some other apps we use, are unusable with proxy-authentication scheme.

Just because of this problem, we are slowly switching to android based phones.

I have been patiently waiting from 2.0 for a fix and even with 4x version now, this little problem has not been addressed.

I am sure this is a very trivial issue, that can be solved if Apple wants to.

But, I guess the number of people having wifi via a proxy with authentication is negligible for apple !

This is similar to the bluetooth remote control stack implementation. After so many upgrades to iOS, i still cannot use my bluetooth stereo headphones "Next / Previous Track" switches to navigate through playlist. I guess these features will never see the daylight.

This makes me wonder, whether android is the right choice indeed, given the flexibility to modify trivial stuff by yourself with help from community, if your phone manufacturer simply ignores you.

I have found that all apps work if you are able to set the proxy settings to auto which works in my usual office

However, if you have to set the proxy to manual which I have to do in this office for some reason then some apps don't work including Mail & Skype (weather & stocks are fine).

Like everyone else, I thinks its ridiculous that the most important app, Mail doesn't work - I can't see it would be hard for Apple to fix this issue....SO WHY DON'T THEY??!

iPhone/iPod Proxy Authentication DOES NOT work.
