Labels in Pages?

I still have the old Appleworks but cannot decipher instructions for making file folder labels. So I went to Pages '09 (4.0.3) & it appears that there is no way to make labels in Pages. Is this true? Given that it's true, is there a way to make file folder labels on an Avery 5266 template on a Mac? Maybe an add-on or Dashboard app?

There several ways of doing your labels:

1. Print directly from Address Book

2. Use the template merge facility, drag an Address Book VCard onto the page, but this only lets you have a sheet with all the same name on it. This is as automated as it gets. Yvan has created an AppleScript which will give you some ability to multiple merge on specific Avery labels.

3. Make a template with only one label per page, merge from Address Book or Numbers, make into .pdfs and drag those into a pre-prepared template or label size placeholders.

4. Copy and paste into placeholder templates.

To sum up the merge method works with quirks, but won't give you multiple addresses on a sheet. Other than that there is no automated label printing.

Jerrold,
Thanks so much for answering--& so soon!! I managed to download the template from Avery in Appleworks (& then couldn't figure out how to use it!), but how do you do it in Pages? Could you walk me through it or give me a link telling me how to do it? I'd really appreciate it. I have spent hours trying to figure out this ridiculous problem & if I can finally solve it I'll feel I really accomplished something.

No, I'm not trying to automate. I simply want to label my personal files.

jean,

There really isn't much to the template, so you can make your own and not get involved with the downloaded Word file.
1. Open a new Pages Page Layout blank template

2. Insert a Table. In the Table inspector, set the table to have 15 rows and 3 columns. Left column 3.43" wide, center column .56" wide and right column 3.43" wide. Row Height .67".

3. Click off the table and then click once on the table to inspect the entire table. Then in the Text Inspector set Center horizontal text alignment and Bottom vertical alignment.

4. Adjust the position of the table to center it on the page. Print a sample on plain paper and check the alignment with your labels.

Let me know how that works out and if you need any further help.

Jerry
