Jun 24, 2010 12:49 AM in response to YvesTourmenby sirdharma,Greetings,
No, the 10.6.4 update does not fix this bug. It is about time Apple acknowledges this bug!

Jun 26, 2010 4:09 AM in response to ApMaXby ApMaX,I can confirm also that the problem persists with Mac OS X 10.6.4. -
Jun 27, 2010 3:51 AM in response to ApMaXby Stranded Starfish,I can confirm too that 10.6.4 also has the bug. -
Jun 27, 2010 10:18 PM in response to ApMaXby Stranded Starfish,For heavens sake, now it happened again!!!
I can´t work like this and I am seriously considering a downgrade to 10.5.8 if I only can find the 2 days it will take...
This is really bad Apple... simple things like this should not happen in the worlds most advanced OS. Please react to the bug reports! -

I did not have the problem described in this topic before upgrading to Snow Leopard. After upgrading, I had it all the time.
The culprit in my case was BlueHarvest. The latest version is Snow Leopard savvy, however, it defaults to nonsensical settings for the .DS_Stores file.
To fix, launch open the BlueHarvest preference pane. In the DS_Stores tab, uncheck "Startup Disk" and "File Servers".
Also does this problem occur with only one user or does it occur for all users?

Jun 29, 2010 4:52 AM in response to J.Cby ApMaX,I do not have BlueHarvest installed. I did not even know what was BlueHarvest. Searching Internet, it seems to be this:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20036/blueharvest
So, in my case it is not BlueHarvest. -
Jun 29, 2010 5:13 AM in response to ApMaXby Stranded Starfish,I don´t have Blue Harvest installed either.
(I´m not much for small apps that interferes with the OS - I like to keep my OS neat and clean and in good shape.
When a bug like this occurs in my system, usually it really is a bug, not some 3rd party software that interferes.
I´m not ruling 3rd party software out as the cause, but I put my money on the bug lead.) -
Jun 29, 2010 5:14 AM in response to J.Cby Stranded Starfish,I haven´t had the time to check if it happens to other users on my machine (I don´t have any).
Maybe I´ll find some time during the weekend. -
Jun 30, 2010 1:51 AM in response to ApMaXby Stranded Starfish,UPDATE
I found a utility that solves the problem "Desktility".
Tried it, it worked perfectly, so I bought it - it really saved my day, so now I can continue working and just wait for the actual bug to be fixed.
The utility can be found here: http://www.desktility.com -
Jun 30, 2010 2:14 AM in response to Stranded Starfishby ApMaX,Free:
Desktop Icon Manager
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19789/desktop-icon-manager
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/211425
But what is needed is the true Apple bug fix. -
Jul 2, 2010 12:02 AM in response to ApMaXby sirdharma,Thank you for the link, it should to the trick while Apple (hopefully) is working on a fix.

P.S : Shouldn't we move this issue in an other thread since it doesn't happen only in 10.6.2 any more ? Also this could be a good occasion to merge the numerous threads about this issue (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11803109#11803109 for example) -
Aug 9, 2010 2:08 PM in response to Stranded Starfishby jlau83,Hey there,
I have just had some luck with this issue, after learning to live with it for the past few months, after doing something atrocious to my permissions.
Here's what I did.
1. Followed instructions to show all files (including hidden files) from http://osxdaily.com/2009/02/25/show-hidden-files-in-os-x/ (don't forget to relaunch Finder!)
2. go to the your desktop folder, and delete the .DS_Store file that is now visible. This file stores all the meta data for the icons on your desktop, including its size and location.
*note: if you can't delete the file due to insufficient permissions, right click the file, select Get Info, and at the bottom of the window, there is "Sharing and Permissions". You will need to change the "privelege" for your user to "Read and Write"
3. To test, I moved a few icons from where they keep getting rearranged to
3. At this point, I have re-hidden the hidden files using the instructions from the website above.
4. Relaunch Finder, and the icons that were moved in step 3 SHOULD stay in their location
5. You're done!
I hope that this helps.
Cheers, -
Aug 11, 2010 2:25 AM in response to jlau83by laeublidicken,Hi jlau83 and all others!
Many thanks for the solution - it works fine.
After three months of otherwise undisturbed happiness with my new iMac I had no more four letter words available to punish the Snow Leopard for always rearranging my personal icon arrangement on the desktop into a boring series of rows.
Regards ! -
Aug 12, 2010 3:12 AM in response to jlau83by ApMaX,To hide/show files and delete them with a true Mac interface (without command-line interface), just use Macintosh Explorer:
http://www.ragesw.com/products/explorer.html
Make sure that you select to show invisible files on the preferences of Macintosh Explorer. -
Sep 2, 2010 2:01 AM in response to laeublidickenby ApMaX,At least in my Mac deleting the .DS_Store file does not fix the issue at all.
