Q: pismo extensions problems

I bought tiger full retail dvd on ebay , it turned out to be a copy !!! when I tried to install Tiger on my pismo it installs for a while, then it either freezes or it says there was an error please restart which then ends up in a kernel panic.
The Pismo has Panther installed via carbon copy since the LG DRN 8080B drive only recognizes dvds. After the kernel panic the panther would only start up with shift held, all extensions out. I looked into the extensions and found the following:
IOCD storage family not valid.
IODV storage family not valid plus dependency incomplete.
it says kext has a kernel dependency prior to version 6.0 and CFBundle does not match executable module version.
I bought the pismo 2nd hand with only OS9installed, do I have to get OSX drivers or whwt does this tectalk mean?

Retail Tiger install DVDs are black with a silver X . If you got a "copy" burned on a DVD, you got an illegal copy. You should get your money back & report the seller to eBay. I suspect the copy you got was not made from the retail installer, but from the installer for another model Mac. The gray colored installers furnished with Macs can't be used. (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ).

Once you get the retail installer, you need to erase the hard drive & then install Tiger.

When you tried to install Tiger did you use the Archive & Install method (& preserve user settings)?

After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page
    http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/

You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/TigerInstall_SetupGuide.pdf

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

thank you for the links. I managed to install tiger on my ibook ( only cd) in target mode , on the pismo itself its not possible, always errors and panics. I installed it on the pismo from the ibook via restore in disk utility, so even if its a bit complicated, it works now on the pismo. I really dont know whats wrong with it though.

How much RAM is installed? OS X is "picky" about RAM quality, whereas OS 9 is more tolerant.

Can you post some of your crash logs? Might be a clue. See Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices. Do you experience the same problems?

To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.

May be a solution on one of these links.

    desperada:

My best guess in terms of the issues you are experiencing is a failing or failed internal HDD. I suggest you download and run SMART Utility 2.0.2. It will analyze your HDD and give you a reading of it's health.

If you used a gray CD/DVD (or a copy of a gray CD/DVD) for an iBook to install on the iBook, that will install a dandy Mac OS X for an iBook, but will be missing important extensions required for a Pismo G3.

Mac OS does not have copy protection, and does not require a serial number, but you need to have a Full Retail CD/DVD to install on "any" Mac.

Actually, this does not seem to be critical in the case of earlier computers like the Pismo. Indeed, before I started frequenting AD and learned some of these fine points, I upgraded my Pismo from OS 9 to Jaguar using an iBook G3 installer I bought on eBay, and later to Panther with an eBay purchase of an eMac gray disk. Never had any issues with either installation.

I stand by my original suggestion concerning 10.4 Tiger:

\[I installed 10.2] Jaguar using an iBook G3 installer I bought on eBay,

That worked because they had not yet started specializing, and all the gray disks were the same as the spotted Jaguar ones.

later \[upgraded to 10.3] Panther with an eBay purchase of an eMac gray disk.

That worked because it was an upgrade, and the additional extensions you needed were already sitting on the Pismo Hard Drive.

Well, actually no. As I recall, I did a full reformat, erase and re-install. With Tiger I used an iBook G4 upgrade disk and it worked beautifully. In that case I simply did an upgrade. Actually, that is the installation on my Pismo to date. It ran well up until last year when I bought my MBP. Well, it still runs well when I used it on occasion. When I started frequenting AD I remember having exchanges with Gulliver and ali brown who were adamant that what I had done couldn't be done.

I have found plenty of users in the PB G3 forums who have done the same with similar results. When we go to G4s things got a bit more complicated.
