mySQL for the Mac

I'm taking an intro to SQL, where I'll be creating a database, tables, records, and writing queries. I installed mySQL however how can I create a database? I installed MySQL Workbench however not sure how to even begin, such as managing a connection. It has the hostname as localhost, username as "root" and no password. No instructions were provided to me so I'm doing this on my own. Are there any instructions out there to get this working.
