How to rename a Pages document?

How to rename a Pages document?

New to Mac and Pages.
I think EVENTUALLY I'm gonna like the Apple way.
But the learning curve is making me feel dumber'n a bag of hammers.

I just want to rename a Pages document.

Click on the smiling Mac icon in the Dock, select Documents from the sidebar, highlight that document, and press Enter.

I looked in Help under Pages.
I looked in Help under Finder.
I looked in a Snow Leopard book.
I looked in an iWork book.
Nada.

Appreciate your letting me in on the secret.

I find it both inconvenient and illogical that you can neither delete nor rename a document from within Pages. Must go to the operating system? But...if that's how Steve wants us to do it...

It is a Mac Os feature. Look in the Mac Help.

Another way -from within Pages whilst your document is open!

Open the Inspector Palette
Click on the Document Tool (the first icon -top left)
Click on the 'Info' tab
Click on "Show File Info" button (at the bottom)

Inside the resulting window (which is actually coming from the Mac OS), you can easily rename the file in the 'Name & Extension:' section. Do not delete the .pages from the end of the filename.

Once you close the File Info window the document will be renamed. You should notice the change at the top of your opened document window.

Please note this is not a substitute for 'Save As'. Renaming an existing document, making changes and then saving will overwrite the original document that was opened in the first place, as the original has simply been renamed.

Yep, that works.
It IS a few "clicks" to get it done, but if I did it enough and sort of got used to it, might not be too bad.

The one thing that surprised me was that the document title, on the first "Info" panel, when you click the "Info" tab at the top of the Inspector window, where it says
Author
Title
Keyword
Comment
...that Title never updates to the new filename.
You have to go in and retype that manually.
So...
We'll figure out the workflow directly.

The 'Title' field you describe is different to the actual filename (title).

Apple describes these fields as 'descriptive information' - right now I can't think of an instance where I would actually use this feature (in addition to the already named file), however any information input in these fields is searchable from Spotlight (if you are familiar with that).

It is not a requirement that you actually use these fields (Author, Title, Keyword, etc).

It's not a secret. It's the standard behaviour in AppleLand.

Applications are allowed to open documents and to save them.
They aren't allowed to move, delete, rename them.
These tasks are dedicated to the Finder (whose icon is the smiling face) and are described in the Finder (in fact the Mac) help !

I don't go back much to Windows or Linux these days, and I don't recall the ability to rename or delete files from within the application.

It is not a bad idea, at least you know what you are dealing with. Although I wonder if there aren't a few calls for help from users who have accidentally trashed their files.

Is this purely a feature in MsOffice or is it consistent amongst all applications?

How long has this feature been part of the suite or system?

How exactly is it done, and is it kept clearly separate from normal operations on the file?
