For example ... with msiexec.exe, i right-click on the file and select "Properties". I go to the version tab. I see "File Version: 4.5.6001.22159" (and nothing more).
Is that where you're seeing the Vista SP1 references? -

If I go to windows\system32 and look at the properties for module msihnd.dll in the Version tab, item name File Version I have "4.5.6001.22159 (vistasp1_ldr.080415-1732)" in the Value Field.
If I go to windows\system32 and look at the properties for module msi.dll in the Version tab, item name File Version I have "4.5.6001.22159" in the Value Field.
If I mouse over the modules I only see the File Version number, I don't see the vista stuff.
On msiexec.exe and msihnd.dll in Properties...Version...File Version the number 4.5.6001.22159 is on the first line of the value field and (vistasp1_ldr.080415-1732) is on the second line of the value field.
Looks like at some point I may have accidentally put on a Vista 32 version of Windows Installer 4.5 instead of the XP version. I checked Add/Remove programs and did not see kb942288 listed, I also looked at all updates installed using Windows Update and didn't see it (which makes sense, you said you installed it on an XP SP3 machine so I guess it has never been included in Windows Update). I went back and looked at the log I found for kb942288 and it was for v3 which is the xp version but it looked like it may have failed. The log I found was dated 06/02/09, I don't remember why I was fooling with Windows Installer back then.
Next step I guess is how to get the right Installer 4.5 on, I may need reigning in again here, let me know what you think. -

Good God ... okay, that's straightforwardly different from what I can see. I think your diagnosis is most likely right.
I didn't know that that was possible.
Still, granted that it is possible, I can see how it could have happened. There's a bunch of different download links on the downloads page at Microsoft for Windows Installer:

... so it would be relatively easy to click on the wrong x86 download link (given that they're identifying it by the version number for Vista (6.0) in the file name rather than putting "Vista" somewhere obvious in the filename.
Going forward ... I'd better warn you in advance that I've never swapped out a Vista version of a Windows Installer 4.5 on an XP box. So this would a be a new procedure for both of us. Are you sure you want to proceed down this road, Mike?
(If you do want to proceed, I think I'd better try some experiments first with the "standard" XP 4.5 version on my beast before we try anything to do with yours.) -

I have seen some articles suggesting trying sfc /scannow, do you think that would do any good.
I also found this tool http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976220/. It looks like it would not hurt to run it (just to look) to see if it tells me the version of kb942288. If it lists v2 that would confirm Vista.
I will just set tight for now. -

Yeah, v2 for Vista, v3 for XP ... good idea, Mike. (Excellent catch ... didn't know that particular tool existed.)
I think we're going to have to go for a variation of install an uninstall here rather than sfc.
(In theory, a *System Restore* might work, because I saw a restore point get automatically created when I did my Installer version 4.5 upgrade ... unfortunately, that might set you back *so far* in terms of updates and whatnot, that I think it's probably going to be cleaner to do a uninstall/reinstall of the installer. After I've done some experimentation.) -

System Restored back to prior to the Windows Installer 4.5 update. Checked msiexec (via "Start > Run", type msiexec hit enter) to confirm version 3.1v2 currently in place.
Uninstalled iTunes, ran ASU. iTunes + QuickTime 9.0.3 shown as available.
Preparing now to attempt installing the Vista version of Windows Installer 4.5. -

(Mutter mutter) Can't get the Vista version of 4.5 to install on the XP PC. That download link leads to an .msu package rather than a .exe package. Bang goes the previous theory about how the Vista version got installed on your PC.
Okay ... will try experimenting with XP 4.5 uninstall/reinstalls now. First, will need to do some research on the best way to go about that. -
Feb 27, 2010 12:46 PMby b noir,Okay. I believe I've got a workable procedure for this. (Tested on Lenny.) We may have to have fight your XP Windows File Protection into submission, though.
Preliminary step. Download and save a copy of the 32-bit XP version of the Windows Installer 4.5 version to your desktop. (Don't run the install just yet.)
[Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable|http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5A58B5 6F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en]
Now we have to make sure that WFP isn't going to undo any changes that we try to make.
In My Computer, go "Tools > folder options". Click the "View" tab. Make sure:
"Show hidden files and folders" is selected.
"Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked.
"Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" is unchecked.
Click OK.
Now open the C:\Windows\system32\dllcache\ directory.
If present, drag the msi.dll file out onto the desktop.
If present, drag the msiexec.exe file out onto the desktop.
If present, drag the msihnd.dll file out onto the desktop.
Now go back into C:\Windows\system32\
Rename msi.dll as msi.old
Rename msiexec.exe as msiexec.old
Rename msihnd.dll as msihnd.old
Restart the PC. (Not sure if it's necessary, but it did no harm on Lenny.)
After the PC restarts, do not open any applications.
Start the Windows Installer 4.5 reinstall by doubleclicking on the WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe file you downloaded earlier.
The PC needs to be restarted after that install.
You should now have a genuine XP Windows Installer 4.5 in place.
... any improvement on the ASU-displaying-updates situation after that? -

Still have the vista stuff when I look at the msiexec.exe and the other one. Installed Itunes, still no updates in ASU. Is there some installer cache that neeeds to be cleared ? -

When I lok at module msiexec.exe using Properties...Version tab and select File Version I have 4.5.6001.22159 (vistasp1_ldr.080415-1732). Now in product version I just have 4.5.6001.22159. I tried the tool referenced in the microsoft article to try and verify version and it did not work. -

I went to my Dads XP SP3 system today. It had Windows Installer 3.1 on it. I installed the Windows Installer 4.5 XP package on it. When I look at module msiexec.exe using Properties...Version tab and select File Version I have 4.5.6001.22159 (vistasp1_ldr.080415-1732), the same as on the trouble machine. I would think you would see it too in that field, the File Version field not the Product Version field.
I think I am convinced the Windows Installer is correct.
I installed Itunes on my Dads machine and ASU worked, I installed it again on the trouble machine and it still does not work.
I mentioned earlier that when I installed it on the trouble machine I get two Itunes icons and have to fool with them to straighten then out. I did not get that on my Dads machine. Is there any other way to look for old Itunes junk in the registry other than the Windows Cleanup Utility. When I try to install the Patch Registration Cleanup Tool I found I get a window that says "A productcode must be specified Press any key to exit" and it won't install.
I am in no hurry, please take care of your other commitments first but if you have any other ideas let me know. I can take my Windows disk and do a repair/restore and see if that fixes it but I consider that a last ditch attempt.
