Files converted from .mod to .mov have no audio in QT

I recorded some video on my sister's JVC camera and then she used her PC to convert the .mod files (which the camera creates) to .mov files. When I play them on my Macbook with QT Pro or iMovie, though, there is no audio. The Movie Inspector and Movie Properties both say there is audio (AAC, Stereo), but nothing will play it. I've tried downloading a few codecs, including Perian, but so far nothing has helped. It doesn't look like the audio is playing in the DivX Player, either. Anyone have any ideas?

There are several files, but here's an example of the Movie Inspector specs from one:
Format: MPEG-4 (Perian), 720 x 480, Millions
AAC, Stereo, 48.000 kHz
FPS: 29.92
Data Size: 11.32 MB
Data Rate: 1040.31 kbits/s

I'm running QT Pro 7.6.4 on a Macbook.

If that's not/you need more info, you'll have to point me towards where to find it. I'd love to hear any thoughts you might have.

I'm running QT Pro 7.6.4 on a Macbook.

In your original post you indicate OS X (10.4.11) and in your latest post it reads OS X (10.4.9) -- which is it? Believe QT V.7.6.4 requires a minimum OS of v10.4.11 to work properly.

While it may not make a difference here, it would be nice to know the AAC profile, audio data rate, audio encoding strategy (ARB, VBR, VBR-Constrained, CBR), and whether or not the audio track is actually active (i.e., checked for playback use in the Properties window). Best thing would be to post a snippet of one of your files, if possible, to see if the problem can be duplicated and/or further analyze the content.

Also, do any the files play in any third-party players like VLC or MPEG Streamclip?

The version inconsistency was just an oversight in hastily responding - I am running .11

If someone would tell me where to find the AAC profile, audio encoding, etc, I'd be happy to provide them. Was the data rate I provided not the right one?

I have tried playing the clips in MPEG Streamclip, DivX Player, QT, & iMovie - no sound in any of them. As far as I can tell, audio is enabled/active (nothing seems muted or disabled in QT properties). I'm not sure how to post a file on the forums, so here's a link to a download of one of the files: http://rapidshare.com/files/351725886/031.mov.html. It's just a short test bit from when I was trying to figure out the camera's stupid auto focus. When I play it, I get no sound - no dialogue, no slam of the car door, nothing.

No. Use the "Properties" window. It can indicate independendent data rates for each track. In this case your audio data rate is only 2.272 Kbps. For optimum playback of a 48 KHz track you would want to use a data rate of 160 Kbps (128 Kbps for a 44.1 KHz sampling rate. Reconvert the original file using an audio data rate in the minimum to optimum range for your specific audio sampling rate. If you have QT 7 Pro installed, look at the "Movie to MPEG-4" audio tab preset to see a list of possible combinations for a given audio sampling rate. Any grayed out combination would not acceptable for use on a Mac and QT Pro would not allow you to select such a combination. Unfortunately, your work flow does not appear to have such safeguards. While you could target any of the acceptible combinations when you re-convert the files, the most common/optimum ones for movie files are 128 Kbps @ 44.1 KHz and 160 Kbps @ 48 KHz assumimng a good audio source.

OTHER COMMENTS: Your video data rate is also low for its 853x480 dimensions. (I.e., your target video data rate would normally be used for a 480x270 iPhone conversion and the MPEG-4 video compression is only about 40% to 50% as efficient as H.264 video compression format. Since you seem to be having problems chosing conversion settings, I would recommend using an application like MPEG Streamclip (free) here. It is available for use on both Mac and PC platforms and is supposed to be able to handle MOD files. However, believe this requires MPEG-2 support which costs $19.99 for the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback Component for use on a Mac or can be free in the form of the KL QuickTime Alternative for use on a PC. Just be sure to reade the install requirements for whichever platform you plan to use. Once installed, use the "Export to MPEG-4" File menu option to open the main conversion window and then press the "iTunes" button to select a specific device target (i.Phone, iPod, or TV) option having the desired predefined settings you wish to use.

Hi,

I work for JVC and would like to try and help.

You may have the best results trying to go back to the the original camcorder, or at least the original .mod (MPEG) files.

The JVC Everio's work great with iMovie '08 and iMovie '09 via a standard USB connection. You can easily import the native video, edit it, and output it in a variety of formats.

You can also play the .mod files natively in Quicktime if you get the MPEG2 plug in for Quick Time from Apple. That is available from Apple for about $20.00.

With both these solutions, you will get audio and video and no file conversion of any kind is necessary.

I hope this is helpful.

Chris
