Macbook Audio on mute!

My audio settings were normal, and when I was having other problems with my computer I restarted it. However, when I booted it up again (on safe boot), the audio is on mute. There's no sound symbol on the top Finder toolbar, and when I go in Sound Settings under System Preferences, everything is check "Mute." However, everything is greyed out and I can't uncheck it. There's no red light from my headphone jack or anything, so I have no idea how to get my sound back....

The other problems I'm having that may contribute to this: I had a regular software update yesterday that I installed, and when I had to restart my computer, the apple logo on startup with the wheel wouldn't go away, so I had to boot up with safe boot. Since then, most of my iTunes library has been erased, and Firefox hasn't been working properly, and, of course, I have no audio. Help? 🙂

*A. Audio Issue*

I've had this with my iBook and MacBook, and the possible solution is very 'untech'.

1. Switch your Mac off.
2. Take out the battery from your Macbook.
3. Wait a sec, then put it back in.
4. Restart your Mac.

*B. iTunes*
As for your iTunes library - do you mean the xml file or your content? You back up/burn discs, right?

Before any serious shiitake, always back your mac up - even using Time Machine once will help, or try Carbon Copy Cloner.

*C. Firefox*

1. Go to Library>Preferences and drag the "org.mozilla.firefox.plist".
2. Then launch Firefox.

This is often a good fix for all naughty apps. You can delete the old 'plist' if this process worked.

BTW - you might get more traction posting separate issues under specific forums.

Let us know how it went.

Thank you! My audio is working again! I had shut down the computer several times for long periods of time, but I suppose removing the battery makes all the difference 🙂

My iTunes is still the same... all of the files have been erased, expect for 172 (I had close to 2,000 music files, and now they've completely disappeared off of my computer). I think I'll invest in a Time Machine after all, especially after this scare.

And Firefox has been running more smoothly since I erased the "org.mozilla.firefox.plist" so thanks for that tip as well!
Also, when I turned on my computer after removing the battery, I didn't have to use Safe Boot anymore (even though I had previously taken the battery out, somehow it still hadn't worked before), which is a good sign, though I got a notice saying several of my fonts couldn't be found, or something along those lines. They aren't fonts I really care about, which is good, but I hope this doesn't continue.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the props. Can you give me a little green star for answering right? Ta!

BTW - did you check your *Music>iTunes>iTunes Music>Music* folder? Sometimes iTunes loses track of where items are, but they can still be on your drive.

And - *Time Machine* is the app that comes with your Mac, in the Apps folder. *Time Capsule* is the wifi HD. You can use Time Machine with any external HD, it doesn't have to be Time Capsule.
