DVD Player Initialization error 69889

The DVD player on my MBP stopped working. Whenever I put a DVD in to play, I get an initialization error -69889. Have seen other posts about repairing permissions on the HD. Have done that, restarted and still get the error. Have also seen post that there is no way to uninstall/reinstall DVD Player. Have eliminated Disk as the problem because same disk works fine on my wife's iMac.
I'd appreciate some guidance on how to proceed.
Thanks,
Steve
