battery warped

my battery doesn't stay properly in my computer. the battery is physically warped. its bent outwards. the battery also doesn't register with the comp. so I'm assuming it has to do with the battery not fitting properly.

could it have something to do with the computer being in high temperatures for long periods of time. or does it have something to do with how old the laptop is. (3 yrs). although my computer has been resting of a flat surface.

I just want to know what could have caused the warping.

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6)

This is a known problem and happens every now and then. See also:

Quote from that page:
The swollen and over-heating batteries are covered by a widespread Sony-manufactured battery recall that was in the news a few months ago. Here is the url for the exchange program:

If your battery is doing this, pull it and run on AC while you get an exchange. >It will keep swelling and running hotter until it is useless.

That repair extension program was only for particular MacBook Pros and has also since closed. It's probably worth bringing to the attention of Apple, regardless. I've seen several scenarios (documented here) where users took a swollen battery into an Apple Store and it had replaced... no questions asked even though the machine was well outside of any warranty coverage.

That being said, I've also seen scenarios where Apple would refuse to replace the battery.

Hi Jason,

Can you please cite those instances where individuals got a replacement battery despite being out of the warranty range? I could use them when I go into the Apple Store tomorrow.

I am one of those unfortunate individuals who got their Macbook in late 2006/early 2007 with a defective battery. I did not know that there was a recall, and am just now having severe problems. My battery is warped.

The battery on my 2.5 year old 17" MacBook Pro also swelled last week and thanks to forums dedicated to this topic, I took it into my local Apple store in Vancouver, BC and they replaced it at no charge. The Genius first ran a diagnostic check on the batter and it had about 280 cycles and the final result was "red" meaning the battery was defective. Pretty sure I was outside of the warranty period. I didn't purchase the MBP at this store nor did I have AppleCare. Great customer service experience from Apple. Saved me $150.
