Q: Upgrading Clients and not Meta Controller

I have a FibreChannel/Raid set up with two client machines and a MetaController. I want to upgrade my client machines to Intel Processors so I can upgrade to Final Cut Studio3. Do I have to upgrade my Meta Controller machine to an Intel Processor to match the client machines even though I'm doing no editing on the MetaController?

G5, Mac OS X (10.4.6)

We have a similar issue, where we are all PowerPC Macs (3) and an Xserve running the whole network, linked to an Xserve Raid. We might have enough money to upgrade our individual workstations to Intel systems, but do we have to upgrade the Xserve and the XSan seats? Can we keep the xserve running its current OS and PowerPC chip?

Please let me know through the email link if you've learned anything. Thanks!

You need to upgrade your Metadata controllers to Intel as well. The issue for your environment would be one of Operating System. Your new systems would require OS 10.6.x. Your MDCs would also have to be 10.6.x.

So, MDC needs to have same OS as clients.

The only way around this would be to buy an older Intel machine which could run 10.5.8.
This would allow you to connect to your G5 XSAN environment and still run Final Cut 7
