Deleting Back Up Files taking forever

I have a back up drive attached to my Mac and have been creating back ups on it using time machine. I recently decided to use it for a different purpose and selected the back up files using a finder window and then hit delete. Then I chose empty trash securely (the only empty trash option that was available). This emptying process is taking forever. Is there any way to speed this up?
