is there a way how to take a picture, which is a photo of a book/ or any text and somehow form that picture into a text format such as a .doc or anything else?
to be more specific, i have a picture of a page in a text book but i want to cut out or edit some words. since its a picture file, i cant do that without editing the picture . i want to have all the words in a .doc format so that i can A. use spell check. B. cut and paste into the document and the list goes on and on...

If you don't want to rewrite the text manually you need a OCR application that can read text from images and turn the text in ti a text file. This kind of application usually comes with scanners. You can try out Vuescan, ReadIRIS OCR, VelOCRaptor, ABBYY FineReader Sprint, PDF OCR 1.4 (free).
You can on a Mac alway make an image to pdf.
