why doesn't Apple themselves release a tool for this? It'd make the eco-system go round perfectly. Why not control Apple tv from the laptop?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

maybe because using the Apple remote is easier?

the whole poing of the appletv is to give you access to your existing itunes library on your TV so that you don't need to be sitting at a laptop/pc.

it seems that all you need is a cable to connect your laptop to your TV.

I don't think this question has been answered.

If I have an iPhone or iPod touch on the same wifi I can control my AppleTV with the remote app.
I'm currently sitting typing this on my macbookpro which is also on the same network as the AppleTV which I am currently listening to music from.
I'd like to change the track - it seems crazy that I need to get up and go and find the remote rather than just controlling it from iTunes here, or some equivalent app on my MBP...?

you can use the appletv as a set of remote speakers in itunes... so you can play your music in itunes on your MBP but have the audio go to the appletv. in this mode you can control the playback as it is itunes that is playing the content.

Thanks Chenks - but thats not what I want to do. I like to have the ATV as the music server and not iTunes on my MBP, as most of the time I want to control it all with my iPhone remotes. However, if I'm sitting at down with the MBP on my knee I can't control use it to skip a track etc (despite being able to tell it what to sync etc)

I understand what you want but the point here is that Apple have not designed AppleTv as a server.

I can entirely understand you might like an app or controller on the computer to control AppleTV - many wouldn't need it but why not.

    Send any feature/enhancement requests here:

    You never know...

All we really need is an iphone emulator app outside of the SDK!
