Q: 27" imac wifi problems (intermittant)

I really wish Apple had email or online support...

I have a 27" i5 imac that I bought just before Christmas, I had lots of problems with the wifi on it, it would not connect and when it did it was very slow, all while my macbook and iphone in the same room showed full signal and a fast rock solid connection. I rang Apple support, it took ages but they were very helpful and eventually we solved it and in the end it seemed to be WPA that was the problem and whilst I was not happy switching to WEP it seemed to work so I went with it.

Fast forward a month or so and I have started having problems again, it is fine when I boot but as the day goes on it gets slower and slower before finally refuses to connect at all. I am wondering if this could be something over-heating but in truth I am puzzled.

Anybody else having issues?

    Wow! I go away for one night and this is what happens? Chaps, seriously, no offense has been taken whatsoever. I am confident in my ability to think through problems through logically. I was, in a previous life, a Mac Genius. I have tried to resolve MY issue/ problem - (years of Apple training make me say this always) and whilst I am still without a proper solution, I feel my thoughts and comments have been taken seriously by Apple. I merely mentioned this to try and help others gain access to Tier 2 support technicians.

     

    I am certain it is a software fault, the AirPort card is working. If it was not being recognised, I'd think otherwise. I have booted from external devices and the problem seems to go away, however I have not tested this extensive as I do have a day job. This weekend I'll be creating a partition on my current drive and testing.

     

    As for the squabble that has now begun, please may it stop. There is no need for anyone to apologise, least of all to me. Thanks to those who'd looked out for me, I am flattered and it is very much appreciated.

    I think Apple must be having a huge laugh at the recent posts on this issue.Your reponses are immature and negative. We have a problem with Apple and any comments should be directed to them, we need to get this issue sorted and this in-fighting is not the way to do it. We should continue to aim all our comments directly to Apple and maybe, one day, they will understand that thousands of unhappy customers is not good for future business.

    I do believe there's nothing wrong with the Airport Card or any router.  I used bootcamp to intall windows 7 in the iMac 27 late 2009. Only in the Mac OS, this is a Problem, and in windows 7, wifi goes well. This should be software problem rather than hardware.

    I would recommend buying a cheap wifi dongle, (or even an ethernet cable) until you can solve your problem. At least you can continue working.

    It might help you highlight to the Apple tech assigned to your case where exactly the problem lies. Although this may be a software issue, the cause may still be from interaction with peripherals. Remember, all your software does is talk to hardware (or other software). I was lucky that most of my issues went after upgrading the firmware on my router.

    I had this problem for a long time and since i configured my energy saving options to never pause the computer wifi never drop off again...

     

     

    its really sad that i didnt know about this crearly hardware problem or really frustrating bug that is affecting only iMac`s after i bought mine.

     

    If i knew this i would have thought about other computer options!

    I have the same issue. It seems to happen everytime I come back to use my iMAC.

     

    Initially I thought it was LogMeIn but then I think it is the WiFi. If I renew the ip address via 'Renew DHCP Lease' everything goes back to normal... again when I closed LogMeIn the computer went back to normal.

     

    Something with the WiFi is not right and it is disappointing with a new 27" machine...

    Sad face... I was excited to see a software update for Airport Utility. But my wifi dropped again within 2 minutes of installing.

    Still having the same old problem. It seems to come and go. It can go offline every 5 seconds for a few minutes and then be fine. Rebooting seems to help.

     

    When I have time to take it to the Mac Dealer I'm going to do so - just so it is recorded as an issue. Who knows what they might find.

     

    But it's very highly annoying. I'd say 4/5 times when I get home from work my wifi has been off ALL DAY like from about 8 a.m. I can tell by the mail times. I have to log off wifi and then log back on - highly annoying!

    Unchecked "Enable default host" on my Time Capsule (via Airport-tool -> Network).

    Seems to have solved my problems with wifi drop-outs.

    I took my 27inch iMac into the Apple store twice for the same reason, and finally had to have them replace the wifi radio antena. It still doesnt' work...

     

    I've had to turn my wifi on and off 5 times just scrolling to the bottom of this page. In fact I've had to cut and paste this message in to Text Edit, so it doesn't get lost.

     

    What's the deal Apple. I want my money back - this 27 inch iMac is next to useless without internet.

    Since buying a 21" iMac several months ago I replaced my router, Apple has replaced my computer, and swapped out three different keyboards for the same problems everyone has mentioned. I stopped counting the number of calls I've made to tech support. Instead of admitting this as a known issue every support person I've ever talked with acts like they've never heard of this problem before.

     

    Very disappointing.

    I too have been affected by this wi-fi problem.  For the past three months or so it has been troublesome, and I have waited patiently for Apple to sort it out -  whilst reading the various interesting rants (some quite understandable - others a bit OTT).

     

    The weird thing is about 3 or 4 weeks ago my iMac started to work just fine; I have had only one drop out since.  I can offer no explanation.  I know I have performed some software updates - maybe that fixed it?

     

    I am still not 100% confident I can turn on my iMac and know it will connect to the interenet.  But have faith guys.  If it happened to me it can happen to you!

     

    Good luck - sympathy to all those still sufferring.  I know how it feels!

     

    It is not a good advert for a so-called premium product is it?

    My initial problem of a dropped wifi signal was ultimately solved by buying a better wifi router.

     

    Setting up a continuous ping helped out immensely.

    Open "terminal", and copy and paste the following:

     

    ping yahoo.com

    64 bytes from 98.137.149.56: icmp_seq=91 ttl=52 time=27.806 ms

    64 bytes from 98.137.149.56: icmp_seq=92 ttl=52 time=27.763 ms

    64 bytes from 98.137.149.56: icmp_seq=91 ttl=52 time=27.806 ms

    64 bytes from 98.137.149.56: icmp_seq=92 ttl=52 time=27.763 ms

     

    hit enter.

     

    The idea being that some piece of hardware along the line is actually going to "sleep" after a small amount of inactivity. This keeps it running and takes up next to no bandwidth. This has worked for me and it's actually been several months since the issue has even come up. I had to do it again on the 4th of July but I suspect it's just as likely that everyone is home for the holiday and clogging it all up by watching Netflix.

    Dumb question on my part... but did you find a reasonable solution yet? Kind of odd how Apple acts like they have never heard of this issue whenever you talk to them.

     

    I do know it is a chipset power management issue that is not handled by the Apple provided wifi drivers. I just can not figure out why? Surely selling defective products will end up costing them a good reputation...
