imported clips order

I have a similar issue with my Panasonic NV-MX7 Camcorder. When importing to iMovie '09 I get thousands of clips with miliseconds length and some of them in the wrong order.
I just started with Mac but I wonder how this makes life easier?

I also would like a way to decide how long the clips should be or to import the whole tape as one clip. Any way around this annoying problem?

Same with me. I import DVD clips, and they are all out of order. I only noticed since the last iMovie revision, (8.0.6). I filed a bug report, (like that will really help 😟

Hello everyone! I have several Mini DV tapes that I had (back then) exported my edited and published movies to in order to (also) store the completed video on the Mini DV tape(s). Now, to fast forward, I want to import the content of my Mini DV tapes into iMovie in order to work with the content further. What I do not like is that I receive several clips which is more than annoying because I have music and narration, etc. already applied from editing the movie back then and exporting to the Mini DV tape - hence, I want ONE CLIP ONLY otherwise, I get cut up transition with narration and music (in iMovie with several clips) that flowed properly from the completed movie on my Mini DV tape. How can I import as ONE CLIP ONLY? Please, anyone, help!!! 🙂 Thank you in advance! Cheers, Jason

I have the same problem. Some time ago I made some home movies using imovie and saved them back to tape (on the camcorder). Now I want to import the edited movies into imovie as a single clip and then burn them onto dvd, but when I import the movies from the camcorder tape into imovie, the clips and transitions/titles/background music are all mixed up. In earlier versions of imovie there was an option in preferences to import as a single clip, but not anymore.

Any suggestions?

Everyone seems to have the same problem here. No one so far the solution..I also have an old DV-mini cam completely edited with sound. To convert these files before my old cam breaks, I want to convert/import them (i suppose) via IMovie and save them in a newer format then .avi. Hence I could trash my old camcorder. The problem I also couldn't solve is that IMovie '09 creates many individiual clips and sorts them in a different order. Re-ordering them would do the trick but I could see some hick-ups between different clips, as if IMovie sometimes adds a transition between those clips. As said before, I simple want one (1) file from the cam (connected via Firewire) to be imported on my mac as one, single file. Any help is greatly appreciated...

I managed to solve the problem in a roundabout way. I found I had an old version of imovie HD (version 6), which allows you to import video as a single clip. But in terms of getting hold of this older version of imovie, I'm not sure that it can be downloaded from the internet.

If I am not mistaken, imovie09 allows you to manually import as well.

SImilar problem here - no solution I'm afraid. Trying to import photo's from PlantCam into iMovie. They also import in a semi random date/time order. Very frustrating.

A work-around on another forum suggests importing photo's first to iPhoto - checking the sort order there - then importing again to iMovie. Whilst this works it is a pain to have to import twice, especially when you have a large no of frames to import.

Seriously, Apple, no help on this? My imported video (on DV) was built from over 200 out-of-chronological-order clips. Why no help? Why, when I search all over the web, is there no answer?

In other words, why does iMovie hate us?

And even with iLife 11 the problem still exists.
Some guys describe a workaround via Windows Movie Maker and then transcoding from DV-AVI to a Mac usable DV format again.
I just went away from MS and now this is the only documented solution and Apple does not address the issue at all?
Is there any other tool for the Mac to backup a DV tape into one single file on a mac which can then be imported as one clip to iMovie? This would at least be an acceptable workaround for me.
If I have to go via Windows I can stickwith Windows!

I am having this problem too. I am going through all my old mini dv tapes and I have quite a few promo reels that are already edited, then I exported them out to the mini dv for storage. Well, now when I import, my hours upon hours of work that I did editing is all messed up. I used imovie in the past and I always through it was pretty simple. The newer versions though are ridiculous. I don't do this kind of work anymore either, so investing in different software isn't really an option for me. I thought I was just being impatient, until I searched and found everyone else has this problem too. Two enthusiastic thumbs down for imovie!

I love Apple but this is killing me. iMovie does 2 of the most annoying things.

First, the movies for the past 5 years that i've imported from my Cannon cammera (AVI) don't work with iMovie but import right into iPhoto.

Second, the movies don't import in order.

Killing me. I've been working on this project for 2 years now because I had to convert my movies and then the creation date got screwed up and when you are working with 400 videos that is a major problem.

Solution:

Use iMovie HD. Bad solution but it is working. It has drag and drop capability that the new iMovies do not and it keeps the clips in the order that you drag them into iMovie
