Terminal.app emacs meta key

Hi, I use Terminal.app a lot, and when i need to edit any file I use emacs. I believe that the default preferences map the 'esc' key as emacs meta'. I've tried to change that to Command or 'alt' using the .emacs file with no success. Does anybody know how to change or swap those keys to get that behavior?

Thank you!

How about Terminal -> Preferences -> Settings -> Keyboard -> Use Option as meta key

Switch to iTerm
<http://iterm.sf.net>
which has iTerm -> Bookmarks -> Manage Profiles -> Keyboard Profiles -> Option key as: Meta

After that, it mght be easier to use one of the GUI versions of emacs, such as Xemacs, or AquaEmacs.

After that you start looking at Ukelele, DoubleCommand, KeyRemap4MacBook, etc...

You could also search <http://MacOSXHints.com> where a lot of Unix oriented Mac OS X solutions have been collected.

I already tried the 'Use Option as meta key' but as strange it may sound, didn't work out.

I'm glad. I'm a Vim user, so I would not know how to test the meta key.
And well, iTerm, it does what i need. Thank you for the idea and your time.

iTerm has been my full time terminal emulator for years. I spend most of my work day in iTerm.

If you have a chance, you should explore some of the other options. Personally, I like the Bookmarks, so I can start a new Tabbed window ssh'ing into a remote system. Also being able to associated a Command-Control-key combo as a hotkey for a Bookmark.

I like iTerm -> Preferences -> Mouse -> Copy on Selection, which means I can select some text, and it is automatically put in the Copy Buffer. I can then just Command-V to paste it (or in my case I have a many buttoned mouse, with one of the buttons set to Command-V; makes it very nice to copy and paste in iTerm).

And in iTerm -> Preferences -> Mouse -> Characters considered part of word, is very nice in that I can customize it so that a double-click selects words according to my preferred rules.

Good luck with iTerm.

Btw is there a an alternative to Terminal.app ... maybe konsole ?

As already mentioned, there is iTerm.

If you want to work in an X11 window, you can use various xterm, rxvt flavors. Check out MacPorts.org and Fink.sf.net for what ports are available.

Whether konsole has been ported to the Mac, I do not know. Maybe some Google searches will turn something up.
