Itunes hacked

Consumer should be alerted: Itunes the most popular apps/music download store for Iphone and Ipods and computers is being hacked.
I happened to me on Friday 19 2010 for $138.00. I received charges for apps and music download that I did not purchase.

I contacted apple without success. All they kept saying is I gave our my password and account ID. I absolutely did not. The items purchased are nothing I would ever think of buying. According to Apple you should change your log in password and contact your bank and/or credit card company and report fraud and the bank can deal with Apple to get your money back. Apple should know where they send the downloads and catch the hacker. Why should I have to do all the leg work for and error made by Apple Itunes.

You shouldn't.
Your bank authorized the charges to your credit card.
When/if you suspect fraudulent/incorrect charges on your credit card, you should always contact your bank or card issuer and dispute the charges.
Apple should know where they send the downloads and catch the hacker

Until you report it to your credit card issuer there is nothing to track down.

For what it's worth, the same thing happened to me today.

I tried logging in to itunes and kept getting error messages saying my username and password were not recognised.
Knowing that I hadn't changed my username nor password, and that I hadn't forgotten either of them, I came on these forums to see if this was a common problem, and found out that this usually goes hand in hand with fraudulent purchases.

Sure enough, I checked my bank account and saw several fraudulent purchases had been made on my card, totally about 90 british pounds. In dollars that would be about $138.

Apple are keeping quiet about this for obvious reasons, but it appears that somebody has accessed accounts, switched the contact email address and then started making purchases.

Thanks Apple!

Add me to the list as well. I too was violated last night. 44 charges and $2900 later, I'm still trying to figure out what happened. Someone made those charges to my iTunes account. I'd recently downloaded an app (the company is located in another country). Not sure if they had something to do with it or not. I also contacted iTunes via email – which I wonder why we can't talk to a live individual instead of having to contact by email. They basically told me to contact my bank and have the bank investigate. Their responses (iTunes rep), almost sound "stepford wives like" if you know what I mean. In the meantime, I'm having to figure out how I'm going to pay bills, my car note, etc. This has caused all kinds of havoc in my life.

Apple just doesn't seem to care:(

Correct.
As previously stated, at the time the charge is made, it is authorized by your bank. Your bank approves the transaction and guarantees payment to iTunes (or whoever).
That's how credit/debit cards work and why they work so easily for you (and others when they are stolen).

I didn't make purchases; therefore, I didn't authorize

You don't need to authorize the charges. The bank does.
You don't owe Apple any money, you owe the bank.

Since the bank authorized and agreed to pay iTunes, it's up to you to dispute the charges with your bank since the bank wants money from you.
Read your credit card agreement. That is what you agreed to do.
