Command + T not working??!!

Hello all.

Just updated my PowerBook 12" to the latest Tiger update, everything is fine until when I am in Safari, to add a new Tab window, when I hit 'Command + T' keys, the Alert sounds off and nothing happens...

Something I miss somewhere??

Thanks and cheers

howwow-

this is completely random, but give it a shot. I was experiencing almost the exact same problem, and was actually browsing this thread, when I solved my issue.

I noticed that absolutely nothing was happening when I was using the command, so I played around some by highlighting some text on the page, and then hitting "command + t". When I did this, my computer "spoke" the text; apparently, "speak selected text when the key is pressed" in the Speech control panel was selected, and the specified command key was "command + t" (which overrode the same command in Safari). I'm not sure if I accidentally set this while playing with it, or if it's the default, but when I unchecked the preference, I had my "command + t" back.

If it's not this specific preference, it may be another Control Panel preference which may be bound to the command...

Safari -> Preferences -> Tabs and make sure the Enable Tabbed Browsing box is checked. Stranger things have happened.

To answer Tom: The rest of the 'Command + key' works perfectly fine, from Command + Clicking a link to Command + W (close a tab or a window) to Command + N (New window) except Command + T, everytime I hit those two keys combo the Alert tone will sound.

Yang, I don't quite understand your question but I don't think I have customise or change any keyboard shortcut to make the default setting "go wonky", I have checked with my iMac and the settings etc should be the same.

Last night I updated to 10.4.3 and the new Java and this morning I launched Safari and wanted to open a new Tab, that's when I discover the Command + T doesn't work, it was working properly before the OS update...

Cheers

Can you create a new user and test Safari there to see if it behaves the same? To create a new user, open System Preferences and click on Accounts. You may have to click on the padlock and give your password, but then click on the plus sign in the lower left corner - no reason for password. You can delete it later if you want by highlighting the account and clicking on the minus sign.

The first thing I would try, and the least drastic, is to delete Safari's preferences file. I have seen all sorts of unrelated but Safari-specific problems caused by a bad preferences file - but not all problems are because of a bad plist. The other account is using the same Safari program, but it has its own preferences file. Quit Safari. In your main/original account got to the Safari folder in the Library folder on Finder's Home Page and drag the file com.apple.Safari.plist to the trash. Restart Safari and see what happens. The only downside of this is that you will loose whatever changes you had made in Safari's preferences and will have to do them again.

Reinstalling the combo installer has fixed things for some other users who have posted here and it would make sure your system was completely up to to date. Repair permissions both before and after running the updater and, just to be sure, check Software Update when you are done, but not before you check out your system. My one concern is that there might be a config problem in the main account because you don't have a problem in your test account.

Sorry for the confusion.

I meant to say that if in Safari, under the 'File' menu, 'New Tab' isn't shown to be associated with a keyboard shortcut (Cmd+T) to the right side of the menu pane, then creating a custom keyboard shortcut to replace the otherwise default one might be a useful work-around while you try to get the problem sorted.

Hi Yang, the 'New Tab' is shown associated with the keyboard 'Command + T'

...and the Combo Updater is not working either, now I am thinking about just re-installing Safari... How do I do that? I remember reading somewhere I would need an app or something to extract the content of the DVD Installer??

To reinstall Safari from the DVD, insert the Install disc with the 'Optional Installs' package, and double click it. Once open, select your install of OS X to install to, then click on the triangle next to 'Applications', under Package Name, and tick the Safari box.

Having said that however, this will most likely not fix your issue, as with a new user the same Safari bundle works as it should. This indicates the issue is in your user directory somewhere, not the Safari application itself.

Hi Howwow,

If it is account-specific and flushing Safari's plist didn't help, you may want to look into plug-ins, enhancers or hotkey applications, e.g. iKey, XKeys, Quick Keys, Sparks, etc (if you have any), which might be conflicting with the keystroke combination.

Regarding plug-ins and enhancers, good places to start looking in are..

~/Library/ Internet Plug-ins/
~/Library/ InputManagers/

.. if they exist. Or their equivalents in the library folder directly subsidiary to your 'hard disk'.

Oh my gosh Manny, you are a Saint!!! This is exactly what is happening to my PowerBook, the second I disable that in Speech, my Command + T is back!!

Thanks a trillion!! Never knew something so simple and basic could have almost made me thought I need another major reinstall/overhaul of the system!!

Learn something new today!!

But funny is that why was that setting in Speech on? Whereas it is not happening to my iMac G5 or my G4 at work?? Hmmm...

Thanks again and cheers
