They(manufacturers of iPod accessories) probably can make a product that plug into the pin connector that gives the iPod users the ability to use 3G data plans. Unfortunately no one seems to be interested in doing so, because so far no plans of such a device ever to exist. The only way to use internet from the cellphone company, is A MiFi is a type of compact wireless router that serves as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. For now that is the only way to have Internet anywhere on the Ipod touch. Unless apple this year around September(when they update their iPod music player devices) decides to add a 3G chip to the Itouch.
As of right now, the only device that Apple has announced that can connect to a 3G network for data only is the iPad. Whether or not Apple will ever put a 3G radio into an iPod touch, no one here can say. But you can express your interest in such a device to Apple via their feedback page:
I will agree with Dave Sawyer, the only thing that comes close to a device that doesn't require a contract or any ties to a company is the new apple Ipad. The Ipad has a 3G version that you can active the service through AT&T which that gives you Internet connection anywhere you go without having to rely on Wifi. And according to recent news on skype website, since apple changed it's policy( of allowing calls through 3G network) with the Ipad you are gonna be capable to make skype calls.
And if you looking for an Iphone without any voice Dara plan, there isn't any avaiable yet. The closest in my opinion it might have to the ipad.
