switching from 3g to edge randomly!

switching from 3g to edge randomly!

So i just got a 16gb iphone 3gs and i am in an area that has pretty much full bars of 3g service and my phone is randomly switching to edge even though i have 3g on and i am not moving location.
To fix it i either have to restart my phone or go into settings and turn 3g off then on.. its really annoying and would like to know if this is happening to other people (which i hope because that means apple might issue a fix) or if it is just me and i have to exchange my phone...
If this happens to anyone else or if someone knows of a fix then please share!

A forum search will find many discussions about this and how to fix it. You should try the following troubleshooting steps:

1. Reset phone - press both home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears.
2. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
3. Restore phone in iTunes using a backup.
4. Get a new SIM card form AT&T.
5. Restore as a new iPhone.

Hey, thank you for the speedy response and although I would consider those steps a little beyond troubleshooting being that it involves me going and getting a new sim card from AT&T, I will do as you said but I guess what I am looking for is assurance that after I do this it will work.
Pretty much I am looking for someone who had this problem and fixed it, did this solution actually work for you?

You can do a forum search and find various people reporting fixes from these methods - not always the same thing for everyone. No one can give you a guarantee that any of this will work - there is always the possibility of a hardware problem in the phone that requires replacement.

You don't seem to understand the concept of troubleshooting steps - you only go to the next one if the step you tried didn't work.

What's "drastic" about resetting the phone or the network settings?? How are any of these steps more "drastic" than exchanging your phone? If you're not willing to put any effort into fixing it yourself, just make an appt. with an Apple Store Genius Bar - a lot more time and effort than anything I suggested.
