iChat Instant Messaging Problem

Please forgive me for starting this question again, I just can't seem to get anywhere. Here is the problem...

All iChat's functions are working fine (Audio, Video, Screen sharing etc). However, when I press the enter key on instant messaging to send the text I get an error noise. I also can't recive instant messages from other users.

I have already tried...
-Changing port to 443
-Deleting mac.apple.iChat.plist (in library/preferences)
-Reinstalling from disk (twice)
-Rebooting the machine
-Changing Message Box style
-Checking my firewall settings (off)

Things I failed to understand/do....
-Update from "COMBO" {what and where is that?}
-checking that plugins are enabled (under the "get info" window of iChat) {there were no plugins listed or even a "Plugins" subtitle}

Thank you for your patience.

I am running 10.6.2 Macbook pro december 2009.
The account is a @mac.com account trying to communicate with another @mac.com account.

Thank you again.
Will

- Open Console from your Utilities folder
- Try sending a message in iChat
- see if it beeps and if something appears in Console
- If so, paste the text

Applying combo update means downloading the last version of Mac OS 10.6 update, currently 10.6.2 available here : http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxv1062update.htm l and run the update.
The effect is to rewrite most files from the system that may be corrupted without reinstalling everything. This is harmless.

Also, what service are you using : AIM, Jabber ?

That's what I got. I forgot to mention it used to work perfectly.

I'm not using AIM or jabber.

I would download the COMBO now but it would take a few hours at my house!

Thanks for the help!

Hi,

A couple of more things.

Does the message include a Web link of any sort ? (An URL)

AIM in this context is any AIM valid ID that signs in to the AIM servers and this includes Apple IDs (@mac.com and @me.com ones) as well as AIM Names

Jabber also would include a GoogleTalk ID being used as the GoogleTalk sever is a Jabber Server.

Well in Input Manager there was a folder to do with a track pad programme I thought I had got rid of ages ago. After deleting it, when I open a text chat the box doesn't open. However when i activate expose the title of the window Appears but with no window above it. A touch confusing. I have restarted iChat and rebooted. No change. Any thoughts? Thanks for all your help. I am a new mac user and have little (no!) knowledge of how everything works!
Thank you.

Oh and there was no URL in the text it was anything from "fjrgoj" to "WHY WON'T YOU WORK!"

To update, i just tried talking to another contact and the original problem occurred. The box appeared but I couldn't send anything.

Hi,

HOw are you opening a Chat window ?

Is it by double clicking a Buddy ?
Or highlighting a Buddy and then the text chat icon at the bottom of the Buddy List ?

When the Window appears where is it on the screen ?
iChat remembers the position of your Outgoing Chats as a sort of Personal Preference and if it is too near the bottom of the screen there can be issues.

Are you using Spaces ?
It is activated in the same System Preferences pane and Exposé
If so is iChat in the "Space" you are currently using ?

In iChat > Preferences > Messages what is the Font for Your Outgoing Messages ?
In the Font Book is that Font Active ?
There is little differences in this iChat 4 pic

That weird blank problem fixed it self after I re-opened chat.
This is what i am seeing now (if it helps) http://i816.photobucket.com/albums/zz88/wowwillwow/Screenshot2010-02-23at215757. png

It's still, therefore, the same problem. Nothing in "input manager" and i am still getting
23/02/2010 22:04:51 iChat[250] Exception detected while handling key input.
23/02/2010 22:04:51 iChat[250] -[FezDDScanner scanInstantMessage:scanOnlyURLs:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x10160f7f0

Thank you for your patience.

to answer your questions

I usually doble click to open chat. I am using spaces but i know where everything is. And it's not a case of not being able to see the text i type. it's just not sending it at all.

Hi,

So your Buddy is typing or is sending a file or Pic that has not got to you yet and you have not sent your blurb.

This is iChat 5
Did the Port Change Stick ?
You have to have SSL On and then Press Enter to "Set" the port in iChat 5 (Don't ask me why they changed this).

It is late here And I may not reply for some hours (Sleep and work)

Hi,

No Problem.

I am glad to hear you have it sorted.

Adium is the name of the Green Duck (Sometimes AdiumX for the OS X version)

Has your Typing changed sides since it has been sorted ?

User uploaded file

The Red Side is From my Main Account/Screen Name which is linked to me Address Book.
The Blue Side is the Account/Screen Name that ralphjohnsr (Ralph G4 in my Address Book) and is the Reciever.

I seem not to be getting the Thought Bubble and Ellipses showing on the Inviting Chat window nor is it being sent to the Buddy.
As you can see the Blue Side (the Buddy) show the Outgoing stuff on the Right hand side (and the Ellipses is being sent to the other Chat window)

This iChat 4 Preferences pic for the Messages Pane also shows the Text on the right for outgoing stuff
http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/versions/ichatvers4/ichatvers4pics/Prefs/slides/iCha t4MessagesPrefs.html

As does th iChat 3 pic
http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/versions/ichat3/ichat3pics/Prefs/slides/iChat3Messag esPrefs.html

However this does somewhat depend on what Style of Text box/Balloon you are using.
Balloon is the Default and is n the right
All the others (Boxes, Compact and Text) are on the Left for both (all) parties.

Thank you!
Incase you were wondering it's not doodle or anything. It's the image you might capture from a bubble chamber, which is a simple way of catching the line subatomic particles leave when they collide! for example the small spirals are electrons and positrons. I think they look surprisingly art too! Physics is such a wonderful thing!

Kind regards,
Will

Hey guys,

have have the exact same message sending and receiving problem right now. I have several accounts setup MobileMe, ICQ, Faceook Jabber and GoogleTalk Jabber. No matter which account I use, these are the symptoms of my problems:

1) Whenever I try to send a message, I can start typing in the input field of the message window and hit enter to send my text. When I hit enter, the input field loses focus, but nothing happens. No message is sent and the text in the input field is not cleared. This is what I see in the console, right after I try to send a message:

03.03.10 08:21:51 iChat[1915] Exception detected while handling key input.
03.03.10 08:21:51 iChat[1915] -[FezDDScanner scanInstantMessage:scanOnlyURLs:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1004f2e40

2) I can't receive messages. Whenever I send myself a message (e.g. from my ICQ account on Adium to my MobileMe account on iChat) or others try to send me a message, I won't see the message or get any feedback from iChat. Instead, this is what shows up in the Console:

03.03.10 08:24:23 iChat[1915] -[FezDDScanner scanInstantMessageArray:scanOnlyURLs:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1004f2e40
03.03.10 08:24:23 iChat[1915] Incoming invocation [<NSInvocation: 0x116a8d2c0>:chat:messageReceived:] threw: -[FezDDScanner scanInstantMessageArray:scanOnlyURLs:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1004f2e40

However, if the other person initiates a direct chat in Adium (instead of simply double clicking my contact and opening a window) I can see the other's avatar and the thinking bubble in the chat window.

I've already looked for InputManagers, but the folder doesn't even exist in ~/Library/ and right now it's empty in /Library/. I've completely uninstalled iChat using AppZapper and reinstalled from my SnowLeopard disk. Right now I really don't have any clue what might be going wrong.

Can someone please help me with this :S

Thx in advance
