Mac Attack ! - the daily kernal panics are killing me

Over the past 2 weeks my mac has been having Kernel panics a lot more frequently. Once when I was recording a song in garageband it just went, I took nothing of it assuming that I had overworked the computer, with a crippling hard drive filled to the brim.

The following week I purchased a Seagate 500gb external hard drive, while it did not mention support for Mac OS I formatted it to a mac format and set it up on the my home network, having it act as a server for mainly my macbook pro. Now every evening I happen to be browsing the computer it has just randomly had a Kernel panic.

Could it be the fact that time machine is now active?
Could it be the drive should it be returned?
Could it be the fact that I had used bootxchanger ( changed back after 1st panic ) ?

Any help would be appreciated and i have posted the report below from when i restarted the mac

Here's a suggestion to start: Boot the computer into and operate in safe mode for a while.

I see you have a lot of "extras" installed that could possibly cause problems. The panic mentions Spinlock, something with which I'm not familiar.

When you prepped the new drive did you partition it using GUID as well as format it Mac OS Extended, Journaled?

Also mentioned in the report are these:

com.smarttech.iokit.SMARTBoard 9.7 (addr 0xe27000, size 0x8192) - last unloaded 261274002343
loaded kexts:
com.taoeffect.ispy.kext 2.0.1
com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.4.2
com.araeliumgroup.driver.screenflickaudio 1.0.0d1
com.manycamllc.driver.ManyCamDriver 0.0.9
com.pctools.iantivirus.kfs 1.0.1

They are all third-party extensions any one of which could be incompatible. Booting into safe mode should disable them giving you a way to determine if one or more of them could be a problem.

The kernel panic occurred because of a timeout getting a spinlock (e.g., trying to get from the kernel a lock for a resource). It's not clear what the resource was form the error, though it's probably Safari or a plugin to Safari that caused it.

Generally speaking, the application itself (Safari) isn't capable of causing the panic. The only things that can are hardware problems, or errors in kernel extensions. You have several kernel extensions that are modifying the audio I/O subsystem, for example. While they may function individually, the audio subsystem might not be stable with more than one extension loaded at once. Safari would load the audio subsystem if Flash, Java, etc. in a page asks for it. If the different extensions get caught in a loop trying to answer a request for an audio resource, you'd get that error.

It's possible that the external drive causes the panic's too. If the drive is sending malformed USB data packets, it's quite possible to cause an issue (though, the OS does have a lot of sanity checks on USB and should be able to handle it).

Hey guys, thanks for all of the useful information. Since using snow leopard since its release I have never had any problems relating to the audio add ons however I did recently install various safari plugins, some of which were uninstalled due to incompatibility.

As for now I think I will try and run another use account which lacks the safari plugin, but still has the automated time machine back ups to the external drive. This way I can be sure that it is the safari plugin although if the problem continues I shall look closer into the drive.

I will keep you all posted

Hey guys, thanks for all of the useful input. I recently uninstalled some safari plugins, and some downloaded mac fonts and it seems to have cleared up. I am going to re-install the safari plugins and see how we go, maybe it was the fonts.

IT has been mentioned that fonts can mess up macs, but is there really any evidence to support it, thanks guys
