I have 4 email acconts in mail. for some reason, in my "inbox" sidebar, two are black, and show the number of mail sent or in. The other two - one is my .mac account - are grayed out. the .mac account has a squiggle instead of the number on in messages, and my other account has a triangle instead of a number next to it. What does this mean?

An account that's greyed and has the "squiggle" icon is offline. Control-click on that account and try the "Take {your account name} Online".

An account that has a triangle next to it usually means that the account on the Mail server can't be reached. Open the Accounts preference in Mail and confirm that you have the correct server and user name settings for that Mail account (check with the provider of that mail account to make sure they haven't changed their server settings).
