Matrox Compress HD card remove chapters markers.

Since november Matrox is aware of this bug but still have not fix-it , the card create H264 files faster than real time and this is very good for the web or creating blu-ray for autoplay.

But if you do long form event for coporate work you client may ask for a few chapters markers to get access to specific parts and the only way to do this is to use your Mac Pro processors only.

So dont get me wrong this card get fantastic picture and sound quality output but by removing chapters markers it is a serious bug Matrox have not fix since november 2009 so 4 months.

The same bug exist for users with PC and windows with adobe suite so untill this is fixed be cautious about Matrox support who is very slow to fix simple thing like this.

When it is fixed i will post back but when or even if Matrox will fix-it i dont know and please forward your problems on Matrox forums if you have been bite by this.

Mac Pro 2009 Dual 2.66Ghz Quad Cores 12GB., Mac OS X (10.6.2), Final Cut Studio 3 / iLife 09 / iWork 09.

Sometimes I use MPEG-Streamclip to convert a video files with chapter marks from FCP to h.264. MPEG-Streamclip will not carry the chapter marks over to the h.264 encoding. (Compressor will)...

Maybe this will work for you...

Open the video file in Quicktime that has the chapter marks. Hit the keys Command+J to bring up the Properties window. Select the Text Track and hit the Extract button in the upper left of the window. This will extract the Text Track (being the chapter marks).

Go to the extracted Text Tack and select all. Click on the h.264 video and make sure the video is at the beginning. File-->Quicktime Menu-->Edit-->Add to Movie. Don't use Add to Selection and Scale.

Open the Properties window (Command+J) for the h.264 video file. Select the Video Track then click on the Other Settings tab, Chapters: pick Text Track. Make sure the text is not Enabled. Do a SAVE AS and check your h.264 video, it should have the chapters marks embedded.

Just to make everything happy. In the Visual Setting tab place the Text Track and video Track on the same level, zero I believe.

I don't know if this will work with Blu-ray encodings, probably not but worth a try on your end.

I have done this with 2 hour h.264 encodings with no drifting (out of sync) of the chapter marks. Chapter marks are in the same place when comparing the h.264 to the original video file.

Sorry to report back it is not working for blu-ray but i will try to use Toast 10 to put back some chapters markers but it will be at Toast preset time of 1-2-3-5 or 10 minutes intervals.

Matrox Compress HD is a great card to create H264 files but the fact it remove the chapters markers at the moment is very bad for a Pro Card of about $600 and the support is very slow.

Instead of searching for alternative workflow i think feedbak to Matrox sale and tech support will help Pro Users the most since it is not serious for Pro to solve this at the place of Matrox.

I have found this info on Matrox forums website about new drivers due in June :

At NAB 2010, we announced that with the 2.0 driver update, due in June, we are adding a bunch of new features to the MAX engine on the Mac.
- variable bit rate mode
- constant quality mode
- complexity control
- a noise filter
- compression rate control
- and a scene detection option
The last one, scene detection, will deliver multi-pass quality faster than software multi-pass.

I will start a new thread when Matrox fix this Chapters Markers bug but for now i will mark this are Answered even if not in reality.

The reasons are i am waiting since november 2009 from Matrox to release a drivers who will fix this and i lack the time to follow all my forums past postings.

Continu if you wish and found some good workaround and Matrox Compress HD is a exellent card for H264 compression their support is just slow.
