Snapback completely disappeared

The snapback feature in my Safari 4.0.4 has suddenly disappeared. I did not install any plugins or made any changes to the settings. It has just gone. I cannot mark a website to snapback nor the button appears in the search field. I reset Safari, wiped the cache and removed all .plists belonging to the program but without success. How do I get the feature back?

I have the same issue. I'm quite sure that the orange colored arrow was visible in the search field some days ago.

Klaus, your suggestions aren't as convenient as snapback in search is/was. For example, if I navigated to the fourth page of a Google search and followed a link and within that new page some other links, snapback brought me back to the fourth page or the search results. No need to use the delete key several times or remember on which page I was using the back button list.

Same issue also here and I also didn't install plugins or made any changes to the computer setting. Just gone yesterday, than came back for less than half hour and finally definitely gone.
I also checked on my MacBook Pro which is configured with two accounts. So same application. If I login with one account Snapback is not working, but it's working if I log in with the second account. This is really really strange as Safari is the same for both accounts.

I was unable to find a way to have the feature back not even an indication on Internet.

Yes, of course. Two times so far.

I created a test account and Safari works without any problems with that. I transfered all Safari folders (preferences, caches and so on) from the new account to the "faulty" one. Snapback remains hidden. Then I tried the other way round and put all the old Safari stuff into the new account. It doesn't touch the Snapback function. Where else does the program store the information?

Hi Steffen

if it worked in a new user account - then it's possibly due to some preference setting beyond
the ones you deleted - was that just com.apple.safari? or did you remove others too?

For example - I don't know if these affecting snapback, but worth a try perhaps;
assuming they're the same on 10.6

com.apple.internetconfig.plist
com.apple.internetconnect.plist
com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist

Or it may be necessary to remove all the prefs, and add them back in groups until you find
the one responsible.

I deleted them but it doesn't help. The com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist file behaves strangely: When I look for it with Spotlight it appears and disappears all the time. Sometimes it doesn't have any permissions and can't even be changed (change the name etc.), sometimes it has permissions of my account.

Or it may be necessary to remove all the prefs, and add them back in groups until you find

I activated the root account and replaced the whole preference folder of my account. No success. I removed everything which I think belongs to Safari from the library. No success. I'm stumped.

That is a little odd - the whole prefs folder should mean we can exclude hidden prefs,
so perhaps there's a cache somewhere? either within the account folder, or one of the per-account
types tucked away outside the actual user accounts.

I had read people saying that snapback was 'retired' with Safari 4 - but I see it still works here, albeit
less obviously than I recall, never having used it much.
