afconvert MPG3?

'MPG3' = MPEG Layer 3 (.mp3, .mpeg, .mpa)
data_formats: '.mp3'

afconvert help shows this conversion format, which I was surprised to see, but it is throwing the following error when I attempt to use it which seems to suggest it doesn't understand the format.

Error: ExtAudioFileSetProperty('cfmt') failed ('fmt?') (1)

Macbook Pro, Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.2), RAID card
