I just bought the new iPod touch 3rd gen and brought it home and plugged it into iTunes.

I began downloading the update to 3.1.3 and after it had finished downloading the iPod got "Alert Message 6" and my iPod froze, locked up and is now completely unresponsive with a black screen a.k.a Bricked.

I tried holding both the button apart and together and had no response.

If I plug it into my computer I get a "USB Device not recognized" Message and the iPod remains black screened.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Sorry to hear about your trouble.

Since it's so new, I wouldn't spend much time trying to troubleshoot it. If you live in a city where there's an Apple Store, make an appointment at the Genius bar and take it in to have them look at it. If not, look in your iPod's documentation: I think there should be a number for Apple Care you can call to talk to someone.

When something new fails so quickly, it's often a defective part and there's not much you can do about it.

Just posting this again, went back to the best buy were I had gotten the iPod and returned it for another one, this one has worked fine until I realized today that I hadn't installed the update to 3.1.3.

I installed this update and afterwards I got the same error, #6 I think, and now again after trying to update it on a second iPod months later, it has crashed and is now completely useless yet again.

When I plug it into my computer, I get an error telling me that the USB device is not recognized and iTunes does not register it either.

Other then never updating my iPod again, I need some help because I do not feel like continuing this vicious circle.

Details on those sync errors can be found in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275

Error 6 pertains to security software problems. Windows computers do much better with Apple firmware updates if you disable your firewall and anti-virus before downloading and installing the update. Follow the troubleshooting steps in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125
