Magic mouse runaway scroll

When I'm typing in a text editor, such as the XCode editor or the Eclipse editor, with annoying frequency the editor will suddenly scroll to the top, so I lose my place where I was typing. Is that what you're talking about? If so, I hope someone has a solution. It's driving me crazy. I have the bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and I'm not sure which is to blame.

I read in another forum that this is caused by inadvertently touching the mouse with the heel of your palm. It sounds likely, but I already got tired of the situation and bought another mouse. However, today I read about this thing that seems like it might fix the problem, although that's not the problem it's trying to solve:

I ordered one and I'll let you know if it works. I have to admit it's kind of ugly, though.

I'm not sure I totally buy the theory either. I'll give the silicon tumor a shot and see if it helps. I also thought about applying some kind of tape to the back of the mouse to see if that helps. Both solutions seriously detract from the design, but the mouse is pretty much unusable to me as is.
It seems like Apple should be able to solve the problem. Maybe not enough people are screaming about it yet. I'm not holding my breath, though. Look how long it took them to address the yellow screen issue.

I have a similar situation except not with the scroll. If I'm looking at a website sometimes it'll jump "back" as if I've pressed the back button and my mouse is no where near it. Same with iPhoto. I can be looking through and album and suddenly cycle back to a previous pic without intentionally doing it. I initially thought I was inadvertently pressing on the mouse so I experimented. I go to a website and if I'm reading something I completely remove my hands from the mouse and keyboard and about 1 in 15 page visits this will happen.

scrolling errors all the time. Magic Mouse is unusable for me.
In Pro Tools absolutely crazy jumping around. Page up Page down or random scrolling only a bit,
clicking on a button is a pain sometimes. Parameters are changing on the fly over a fader or button.
it's a pain. somebody said it's because of randomly touching the the mouse with the palm on
the lower part of the mouse. With Magic Pref you can fix it, but still the same scrolling on ti's own.

anybody found a solution ? .....couldn't find anything in the web.

I finally got the silicon gizmo today. I stuck it on my mouse and tried to reproduce the runaway scroll, and couldn't do it. It may be too early to say, but I think it may have fixed the scroll problem. I haven't had the back button problem, so I can't report on that.

Also, I didn't know about MagicPref. I just installed it and used the Configure Scrolling function to ignore the back half of the mouse.

I'm going to give both solutions a few days trial, and I'll let you know what I find out.

I'm also having a problem with the Magic Mouse. Last night I typed a rather long reply to a question on a website, and suddenly the page scrolled back and I lost all I had written. Today, in the middle of a lengthy reply, it did it again.

This is very frustrating. I'm thinking of junking the Magic Mouse for a standard wired mouse. This thing is unpredictable and has ruined two long and irretrievable instructional replies.

I have this same problem. I have verified that it is not caused by my hand touching the mouse in any way. I can reproduce it every time. It is especially pronounced in MS Powerpoint. This reproduces it: Turn on scrolling with momentum in the system settings. In PPT, find a slide with several objects on it. Select one of the objects by clicking on it, lift your fingers and then quickly move the mouse. The app will scroll in the direction you moved the mouse. Of course make sure your hand is only touching the sides of the mouse. I can reproduce this 8 out of 10 tries with my mouse. Makes the mouse unusable in PPT. Turning off scrolling with momentum reduces the frequency and overall effect of the bug. Apple really needs to fix this. FYI: 1) My mouse is one of the very early ones. Purchased it within a few days of them arriving in the stores. 2) I've had the same problem with TWO MacBook pros the last generation and my new i7 based pro. 3) I have verified it has nothing to do with my hand accidentally touching the mouse in any way. Sorry, can't blame it on user error. Apple, please help with this. The mouse is way too expensive to have this kind of problem.

Glad to see your post, handyman. I got my magic mouse yesterday and had problems today in PPT and it was driving me nuts. It kept scrolling to other slides in the presentation when I was just trying to do stuff to the field I'd selected. I will try turning off "momentum scrolling" as somebody else suggested. Bah, humbug.

like Apple is just unusable ?
I went back to my wired Mighty One.
To stay in topic, I had the experience that it happened mostly with big Applications like Logic, Pro Tools FCP ...!

Well I am also experiencing the same problems but ONLY with selected apps which leads me to think it might not be all mouse's fault.I NEVER experience this using any of the apple app as a matter of fact I experience this ONLY using 2 apps . Namely Cubase 5 and Civilization 4 . Both apps have a little bit of a catching up to do . When I start these I go and disable the scroll in mouse properties . And since I NEVER get the jumping scroll outside of these scenarios I don't flame and blame apple yet 🙂

...please don't misunderstand me, I love Apple products a lot, they do fantastic jobs,
that's why I'm since Mac Classic, my first Mac, a apple user. Never in my live I had a windows PC.....
but with this mouse I have my problems. AND I'm not the only one, you know this, I saw
your posts.
You have the problem with two apps, Cubase Civilisation 4, no Apple apps, me I have problem
with Logic Pro 9, Sound Track Pro, iTunes and also non Apple apps, like Pro Tools HD, Live and
some others. Even in Safari !! It's not only scrolling, it's also changing a rubber band selection, and
very annoying is, when I change a parameter, for example in a plug in, after the release of the mouse button and move away of the parameter box, it changes randomly. very, very annoying !!
I did a lot of things other users mentioned. But nothing helped.
So I reconnected my Mighty Mouse, wired.
Sorry Murat, this can only be a Mouse behaviour, a Magic Mouse behaviour, because my Mighty
Bluetooth Mouse is working just fine.

BTW, where you from Murat ? .... are you Moroccan !
