I can not read the double layer install disc of leopard.
I want to boot from external firewire.
The external disk mounts OK on the imac.
It is seen on preferences/startup.
Partitions of external firewire are Apple Partition Map.
But when I start with "alt" or from "preference /startup", the external firewire does not appear in the list of bootable drives.
Any ideas.

Thanks

An external drive, in order to be bootable, has to have a version of the OS on it.

Does your firewire drive have Leopard installed on it?

For the moment Leopard is not installed but a 10.2.8 system called "eDrive" created by TechTool Pro. I can see it in Preferences Startup but not when I wnt to boot on it.
    Thanks.

    Hey fan,
.. but a 10.2.8 system called "eDrive" created by TechTool Pro. I can see it in Preferences Startup but not when I wnt to boot on it.

The earliest G5 iMacs required 10.3 so your iMac G5 won't boot into 10.2.8.
You'll need to install a later system.

Install leopard of the external and you will be able to boot from it.

    Thanks all.
I made a partition of my HD and restore the install disc.
I can not boot from the firewire.

If I understand you correctly, you installed Leopard on a partition of your external firewire drive and still cannot boot from it?
When you mount the firewire drive does it show both partitions? Can you mount it, then go to System Preferences>Startup disk and choose the Leopard partition and restart? Does anything other than your internal drive show up when you go to Startup disk?

Sorry to thread hijack, but I'm having the exact same problem (Snow Leopard). The external firewire 10.6 partition shows up on the desktop and in Startup Disk, but not in the bootloader upon restart.

It is probably not bootable, but if it shows up in startup disks, you should be able to select it and boot. If not, reinstall SL on it and see it that works.

    no luck with the re-restore

even tried powering the external off/on during the white screen
