Email not updating

I use Gmail via the mail application, set to fetch manually. Recently, though, it has been buggy about downloading the email, and for the past day I haven't been able to download it at all, or delete messages. I keeps checking and saying the mailbox is updated even though it isn't (i.e. it says 9 new messages even though I'm on my computer and have since read all of those). I've turned off and on my phone, and it still doesn't update.

Any ideas what might be going on?

I'm having email issues as well in the last couple days. Got back from vacation on Wednesday retrieved all my emails without a glitch and suddenly my iPhone does not retrieve emails but I do get emails when I check with my computer. It's happening with a business account I have at my domain name as well as home @shaw.ca so 2 different ISP, retrieve hotmail emails seems to be working fine though.

I too tried with / without wifi I haven't tried to re-create my emails account as I've got a bunch and I doubt it will fix anything. Until I discovered that although I thought I had quit my mail reader on my computer it was still on and was retrieving my messages and since I have enabled the option to delete from server my emails were not showing on my iPhone because of it.

I am having a similar problem on my iPhone 3g. It says there are 8 unread messages, but when I go to mail, all mail has been read and says "no unread messages." How do you clear out the 8 on home screen. It has happened before, but luckily there was an Apple Genius nearby and he cleared it out. I have no clue what he did... help? Mahalos from the Big Island

For many people, what has worked is to quit the mail application (from home screen, hit the home button 2x - the active applications come up. Put your finger on the mail app until the minus sign comes up, touch the minus sign to close the app). Then go to the home screen and bring up mail. All your emails should flow in and mail will continue to function as it should. At least doing what I suggest above solved the problem for me.
