Let's try something relatively simple first.

Download and save a fresh copy of the iTunes installer to your Desktop (don't run the install on line):

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Now right click the iTunesSetup.exe (installer) file, and select "Run as administrator".

Any better luck with getting that install to go through?

ok. Now it did install with that download.
Now it appears as though I have two itunes on my desktop. One is labeled 64 bit (the new one I just downloaded). Do I delete the old one? When I clicked on it to open it , I got an error code. "itunes was unable to load dataclass information from sync services reconnect or try again later"

... okay. Even if it isn't installed now, has a Symantec security product like Norton *ever been* installed on the PC? (say, as a "factory preload" trial version?)

(Checking, because sometimes bits and bobs of undead Norton componentry can survive on your PC after an uninstall. And CA and Symantec security products are the ones I associate most commonly with that particular error message.)

That would be a YES. I believe Norton was on this system when I bought it.

Ahhhhh.

I think it might be a good idea to try running Symantec's Norton Removal Tool to clean away any leftovers from that install. (They have a nasty habit of doing things like interfering with iTunes launches and/or Store connections.) Warning in advance ... the Tool removes all Symantec componentry from the PC, so if you're using a non-security product like WinFax on the PC, be sure to back up your data prior to running the tool:

[Download and run the Norton Removal Tool|http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039]

(Will get to the desktop icons thing ... just thought it would be prudent to attend to the possibility of an "undead Norton" situation first.)
