24' 2.16ghz video issues and freezing w 10.5

I was running 10.5.x - I honestly forget where it was at version wise but it was fully updated as of Thursday the 25th of Feb. and I was getting many random horizontal "rainbow" lines in Safari (also updated to that day) and also the machine would totally lock up and need to be powered off via the power button and restarted. Also, I have an AOC 22" monitor on extended desktop and it would randomly dim like it was going to sleep and then wake up on it's own while I was working on it. I had a 1tb WD drive for almost 8 months and a fresh install as of Monday the 22nd of Feb so I doubt it was that but on a guess I swapped in my OEM 250gb drive with 10.4.11 on it and have had no issues since. I installed the widget for monitoring temps and my GPU temp with 10.5 was almost 62* C and running the same apps in 10.4 it is 50-51* C so maybe that is my issue? I was told to take it for repairs to an authorized Apple repair center BUT I can see this taking weeks to sort out and I have to run my whole life from this computer as I sell on Ebay and dread going back to Windows even for a short time. Anyone else experience this with this particular machine in 10.5? I was running 10.5 since I put in the 1tb drive with no issues up until then other than occasional horizontal lines in Safari, also I when it started locking up I was getting the same lines only thicker when playing a DVD as well. I do not push this machine as normally ALL I have running is Mail, Safari, Firefox and sometimes GarageSale and Iphoto but very rarely more than 3 of the above at one time. No gaming etc either.

I got my external enclosure from OWC today for the 1tb drive I removed from my machine and I am going to install it and then do a back to back reboot from the internal drive on 10.4 vs the external drive on 10.5 and will see if that makes a difference. Right now just running Safari alone my GPU temp is 52* C which is 2* HIGHER than with Safari, Firefox, Itunes and Mail running, makes no sense that I lessen the load temp rises.

I had this happen a few more times under 10.5 but it seems OK under 10.4 so I am wondering now if it is a hardware or software issue. I tried 10.5 fresh installs on 2 different drives and a fresh install of 10.4 on the original drive now in the machine so I do not think it is my install procedure and I did full updates on each as soon as install was done. I took a few pics and will post one to see if this looks like graphics/logic board issues or not. These were taken under 10.5, when this happened machine totally froze except cursor for the mouse was moving and visible. The only other action was spinning beach ball, had to hold the power button to shut it down and restart it. I had 3 apps open, Safari, Firefox and Mail so I was not exactly stressing the machine. This happens on BOTH the internal display as well as the external, the first pic is the external display, the rest the internal display.

I have almost exactly the same patern on my screen. But after a while I could boot only in target mode by Firewire with another computer. If I boot from DVD or from HD, then the complete screen turns in that patern, The system starts up, but after while the turning systemwheel stops, and the only thing on the screen is that patern. I'm almost certain that the videocard is failing : it seems to be that end 2006, beginning 2007 Nvidea produced videocards of lesser quality. I'm going to replace the videocard this week and I'll let you know if it works.

I got my card replaced under Applecare and it seems fine now BUT I am only booting into 10.4 but I was starting to get in 10.4 before the card was changed so I believe it is fixed. One thing to note on my issue I ALWAYS from day one had a secondary monitor running extended desktop with it. I started with a 19" and later a 22" and it was not doing it at the Apple Store until they added a second monitor to match my setup and it started to do it within an hour so they replaced the card.

Actually it is not and I know it because I had one all apart already and had the card off. It is soldered on the smaller machines NOT the 24". Plus, I saw him ordering the parts and he ordered a logic board and graphics card for it to cover all bases as I needed it back right away to keep working. Here are the part #'s he ordered - I took these right from the work order he printed when I checked it in. I am just glad it is fixed.
