can an unactivated iphone be used as an ipod touch??

HI,

I am about to upgrade from the 1st gen to the 3GS. Once I activate the 3GS, can I still use the apps and ipod features on the old (soon to be deactivated) iphone?

Unactivated - No. Before you can do anything with an iPhone it has to be activated somehow. maybe PAYG phones are different but carrier locked ones certainly do.

Activated but no longer on a contract - Yes as long as you keep the original SIM handy in case you do an update.
